JOB SUMMARY

The Licensed Practical Nurse specializing in ocular tissue plays a vital role in the Eye Bank, functioning as a Certified Eye Bank Technician (CEBT) and acting as a physician representative in the authorization of corneal tissues for transplantation. This position involves meticulous screening of donor medical and eye bank documentation to evaluate donor and tissue appropriateness, alongside conducting microscopic assessments of corneal tissues.

The nurse also engages in the recovery of ocular tissues for transplant and undertakes all related responsibilities associated with corneal recovery.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current registration with the Association of New Brunswick Licensed Practical Nurses (ANBLPN).
  • Completion of an accredited LPN program.
  • Background in Critical Care is advantageous.
  • Experience in ocular and/or tissue banking is preferred.
  • Certification as a Certified Eye Bank Technician (CEBT) from the Eye Bank Association of America.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and readiness to travel as required.
  • Strong work ethic with a consistent attendance record.
  • Capability to fulfill the responsibilities of the role.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Actively engages in clinical, operational, training, and quality initiatives to support ocular procurement, processing, and distribution.
  • Leverages clinical and technical expertise to provide guidance, training, and orientation to Eye Bank Technicians and other healthcare professionals.
  • Executes the duties of a Certified Eye Bank Technician (CEBT) and acts as a physician representative in the release of ocular tissues for transplantation.
  • Conducts microscopic examinations of corneal tissues.
  • Responsible for the recovery of corneas and associated recovery tasks.
  • Participates in the Quality Assurance Program of the New Brunswick Organ and Tissue Donation Program (NBOTP).
  • Ensures the highest quality and safety standards for tissues, adhering to regulatory requirements and quality system standards.
  • Works effectively both as a team member and independently with minimal supervision within the defined scope of practice.
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with the Manager, Medical Director, and other staff members.
  • Fosters a supportive team environment that encourages professional development, collaboration, and innovation.
  • Provides nursing expertise to facilitate cornea donation and transplantation activities for Eye Bank Technicians and other allied health professionals.
  • Undertakes additional duties as assigned by the Nurse Manager.
  • Supports donor families by obtaining consent and discussing cornea donation.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary healthcare professionals to assess donor eligibility and coordinates with relevant authorities for cornea retrieval.
  • Conducts thorough medical chart reviews, donor risk assessments, and physical examinations to determine donor eligibility.
  • Monitors for potential adverse outcomes that may impact patient safety and ensures proper reporting.
  • Maintains accurate documentation and data entry.
  • Responsible for the distribution and tracking of corneas for transplantation and performing necessary procedures for cornea processing.
