Licensed Practical Nurse for Eye Bank Services

JOB SUMMARY
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Eye Bank plays a critical role as a Certified Eye Bank Technician (CEBT) and as a physician representative in the allocation of corneal tissues for transplantation. This position involves evaluating donor medical and eye bank documentation to determine the suitability of both the donor and the tissue, as well as conducting microscopic assessments of corneal samples.
The LPN is also actively engaged in the retrieval of ocular tissues for transplant purposes and performs various associated responsibilities related to corneal recovery.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Current registration with the Association of New Brunswick Licensed Practical Nurses (ANBLPN). Completion of an accredited LPN training program. Background in Critical Care is preferred. Experience in ocular and/or tissue banking is advantageous. Certification as a Certified Eye Bank Technician (CEBT) from the Eye Bank Association of America. Possession of a valid driver's license and readiness to travel as necessary. Strong work ethic with a consistent attendance record. Capability to fulfill the responsibilities of the role effectively.PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Actively engages in clinical, operational, educational, and quality assurance activities to facilitate ocular procurement, processing, and distribution. Applies clinical and technical expertise to mentor, train, and orient New Brunswick Eye Bank Technicians and other healthcare professionals as needed. Executes the duties of a Certified Eye Bank Technician (CEBT) and acts as a physician representative in the allocation of ocular tissues for transplantation. Conducts microscopic examinations of corneal tissues. Undertakes the recovery of corneas and related recovery tasks. Contributes to the NBOTP Quality Assurance Program. Ensures the highest quality and safety standards for tissues, adhering to regulatory guidelines and quality system standards. Works collaboratively as part of a team and independently with minimal supervision within established practice parameters. Communicates effectively with the Manager, Medical Director, and other team members (NBOTP Staff and NB Eye Bank Technicians). Fosters a supportive team environment that encourages professional development, collaboration, and innovation. Provides nursing expertise to assist with cornea donation and transplantation activities for New Brunswick Eye Bank Technicians and other allied health professionals. Performs additional duties as assigned by the Nurse Manager. Supports donor families by obtaining consent and discussing cornea donation with families or next-of-kin. Collaborates with local and provincial multidisciplinary healthcare facilities and professionals to assess donor eligibility for potential donors. Consults with coroners, pathologists, and family physicians regarding the coordination and retrieval of corneas. Responsible for conducting medical chart reviews, donor risk assessments, and physical examinations to determine donor eligibility for cornea donation, as well as interpreting the relevant documentation. Monitors for potential adverse outcomes or reactions that may impact patient safety and require reporting to regulatory bodies. Ensures accurate documentation and data entry. Additional responsibilities include the distribution and tracking of corneas for transplantation and performing necessary procedures for cornea processing.Note: The responsibilities outlined in this posting represent the core duties of this position and may evolve based on advancements in cornea donation and transplantation as well as operational requirements.
