Position Overview

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is looking for motivated nursing students or internationally educated nurses to participate in the Clinical Extern Program. This program offers a unique opportunity for students enrolled in RN and RPN entry-to-practice programs to apply their knowledge and skills within a psychiatric care setting. Clinical externs will acquire essential patient care experience and foster relationships with a dedicated team of interprofessional care providers in a hospital environment. Successful externs may be considered for nursing positions following graduation and licensure. Under the supervision of CAMH's Nursing Resource Unit, the Clinical Extern operates as an unregulated health care provider, navigating a dynamic environment and collaborating with an interprofessional team to advocate for wellness while ensuring the provision of safe, effective, and ethical care. The Clinical Extern collaborates with the team under the direct oversight of a Regulated Nurse (Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse) and an Extern Mentor, contributing to the enhancement of practice excellence. Through education, experience, and reflective practice, the Clinical Extern will develop their competencies. All Clinical Externs are required to complete mandatory training as part of CAMH's orientation and unit-specific activities.

Key Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

Operates under the direct and/or indirect supervision of a nurse (RN or RPN) to ensure the requisite knowledge, skills, and judgment for performing all assigned tasks; Adheres to organizational policies and professional standards while considering the guidance provided by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) for unregulated care providers; Engages in patient assessments (e.g., mental status evaluations, suicide risk assessments, physical health evaluations) and assists with daily living activities; Seeks assistance with assigned responsibilities when necessary; Contributes to care planning, safety planning, and evaluation processes; Provides support with lifting, turning, transferring, transporting, and ambulating patients as required; Aids in comfort measures and patient safety by maintaining a clean and hazard-free environment; Participates in additional skills as approved; Requests assistance with assigned duties whenever needed; Ensures effective transfer of accountability during shift reports and breaks; Contributes to and promotes positive team dynamics.

Required Qualifications

Nursing students in any year of a College of Nurses of Ontario Baccalaureate Nursing Program (e.g., BNSc), or final year of a College of Nurses of Ontario approved Practical Nursing program OR Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) who have initiated registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), have received a CNO letter of direction, and meet one of the following criteria: are enrolled in any year of study in a CNO approved program, such as a BScN-IEN program, PN-IEN program, or are completing a micro-credential plan that aligns with CNO registration requirements (e.g., Standards of Practice for nursing, Entry-to-Practice Competencies, Evidence of Safe Practice, Evidence of English Language Proficiency) or have fulfilled their educational requirements (e.g., BScN-IEN/PN-IEN program or micro-credentialing) and are awaiting their registration exam; Strong academic performance; Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support is mandatory; Demonstrated knowledge of infection prevention and control practices is an asset; Proven problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking abilities; Excellent organizational and time-management skills; Effective interpersonal and communication skills; Experience in psychiatric/mental health nursing (clinical practicums) with individuals experiencing mental illness and/or addictions is advantageous; Ability to work with clients from diverse cultural and social backgrounds is essential; Proficiency in computer usage is required; Bilingualism (French/English) and/or proficiency in an additional language is a plus.
