About Our Organization

The Animal Care and Veterinary Services (ACVS) unit is committed to supporting researchers in their pursuit of solutions to critical global challenges while upholding the highest standards of ethics and care in animal-based research.



Key Responsibilities

The Animal Care Technician will undertake responsibilities including:

  • Providing comprehensive animal husbandry.
  • Assisting with technical animal care and laboratory procedures.
  • Ensuring accurate completion and maintenance of all required records and documentation.
  • Reporting any physical or behavioral irregularities.
  • Performing all animal care tasks in compliance with departmental and regulatory guidelines.
  • Administering supplies and maintaining equipment.
  • Coordinating cage census activities for the animal care team.
  • Demonstrating genuine compassion for animals and advocating for their welfare by promptly addressing any environmental, experimental, or health concerns with animal care leadership.


Qualifications

Education:

  • Completion of a 2-year community college Veterinary Technician Diploma.
  • Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT) designation is preferred.

Experience:

  • Over 2 years and up to 4 years of experience in an animal care environment, including handling and monitoring animal health.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Understanding of normal health indicators for various animal species.
  • Ability to provide consistent animal husbandry in line with relevant policies and procedures, and to identify and report health issues.
  • Capability to uphold animal care standards in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Proficiency in utilizing ergonomically sound practices.
  • Ability to foster teamwork and respect among colleagues.
  • Strong verbal communication skills to articulate ideas clearly and adapt communication style as needed.
  • Competence in completing detailed records and reports.
  • Positive attitude with a strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to evaluate current processes and suggest improvements.
  • Flexibility to work within a schedule that accommodates university events and activities.
  • Attention to detail in maintaining electronic and physical records.
  • Discretion and maturity in handling confidential matters.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently.
  • Professional interaction with students, staff, faculty, and the university community.
  • Commitment to ensuring a safe environment by identifying and addressing safety hazards.
