Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Support Specialist for Individuals with Unique Needs to join our team. This role involves providing essential assistance both inside and outside the classroom for students requiring specialized support.


Key Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of this position may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting with mobility and orientation for students with visual impairments.
  • Providing personal care and communication support.
  • Facilitating social interactions and study skills development.
  • Offering learning assistance and financial management support.
  • Implementing strategies for anger management and conflict resolution.

Additionally, the Support Specialist will collaborate with instructors to adapt educational materials and assess student progress. This includes:

  • Preparing modified instructional resources.
  • Engaging in discussions with instructors regarding student needs and accommodations.
  • Coordinating exam arrangements and supervising assessments as necessary.

Furthermore, the role involves acting as a liaison among students, instructors, caregivers, and relevant community resources to ensure effective communication and support. This includes:

  • Maintaining contact with caregivers to address student requirements.
  • Collaborating with external agencies when needed.
  • Providing regular updates to the department leadership.

Qualifications:
Applicants should possess a high school diploma along with completion of a one-year community college program in a related field, such as social services. A minimum of six months of relevant experience is also required.

Skills and Competencies:
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • In-depth understanding of the challenges faced by students with unique needs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • Capability to provide personal care and support.

Preferred Credentials:
A valid CEA or HSW Certificate is preferred, along with experience working with students with special needs.
