Position Overview

This role involves providing essential technical and logistical assistance in the functioning of the Biology laboratory. Responsibilities include preparing activities, materials, and displays in accordance with the Biology faculty's curriculum approval, aiding Lab Facilitators in their preparation tasks for upper-level courses, and overseeing the upkeep, care, and management of laboratory equipment and supplies.

Key Responsibilities
1. Material Preparation and Display
a. Research, select, and prepare a diverse range of materials and displays for the Biology laboratory, ensuring alignment with the curriculum.
b. Assist Lab Facilitators as required in their preparation duties for upper-level courses.
c. Supervise student assistants, providing orientation and training in specific job responsibilities.
d. Acquire, maintain, and prepare living protist cultures.
e. Prepare media, subcultures, and accurately cross various Drosophila strains.
f. Create signs and text for displays using computer software.
g. Ensure timely acquisition of perishable biological materials.
h. Maintain laboratory equipment in optimal working condition, including performing minor repairs and keeping service records.
i. Construct or modify laboratory equipment as necessary.
j. Set up and maintain both saltwater and freshwater aquariums and manage greenhouse operations.
k. Ensure compliance with WHMIS regulations, including the preparation of necessary documentation.
l. Receive deliveries and notify Lab Facilitators of material arrivals, updating relevant documentation.
m. Maintain an inventory of chemicals, prepare chemical solutions, and manage chemical waste disposal.
n. Execute emergency procedures in the event of a chemical spill, fire, or injury, following safety data sheet (SDS) instructions.
o. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe preparation area, ensuring compliance with disposal protocols.

2. Technical Assistance
a. Assist in testing experiments for inclusion in laboratory manuals and upper-level courses.
b. Support lab examination preparation, setup, and cleanup.
c. Maintain resource materials such as books, catalogs, files, and microscope slides.
d. Conduct dissections for weekly lab demonstrations and exams.
e. Gather and prepare supplies, solutions, and consumables for weekly lab transitions.

3. Equipment and Supply Management
a. Order, receive, and verify materials and supplies, maintaining inventory and processing payments.
b. Maintain resource materials, including catalogs, information files, books, microscope slides, models, charts, and posters.
c. Care for laboratory animals as required.

4. Additional Duties
a. Trained in Biosafety protocols for safe operations in CL2 level laboratories per PHAC guidelines.
b. Stay updated on current trends and developments in college-level biology courses.

Qualifications
To excel in this position, candidates should possess:
- Proficient knowledge of the English language (both written and verbal).
- Familiarity with course content, laboratory equipment operation, and maintenance, along with modern techniques relevant to first and second-year Biology instruction.
- Strong understanding of safety measures associated with biology laboratory operations, including GHS regulations.
- Effective communication skills to interact courteously with students, faculty, administrators, staff, and the public.
- Ability to maintain current knowledge in the field of Biology.
- Proven capability to demonstrate proper laboratory techniques effectively.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while establishing priorities and meeting deadlines.
- Commitment to maintaining a high level of confidentiality.
