Job Summary

The Laboratory Facilitator, Biology will provide instruction, evaluation, and supervision of students in the biology laboratory, including preparation of materials for use in the laboratory, subject to the curricula approval of the Biology Faculty. This position will also provide exceptional client-centred service on a consistent basis to all stakeholder groups.

Key Responsibilities

  • Instruction and Demonstration
    • Provides laboratory instruction and demonstration related to college biology courses, subject to the curricula approval of the Biology Faculty.
    • Instructs students with respect to the laboratory component of college biology courses and assists students with difficulties related to the lecture component of courses.
    • Demonstrates the correct use of equipment in the laboratory.
    • Instructs students with respect to safety procedures.
    • Supervises students in the laboratory, ensuring compliance with safety procedures.
    • Develops and implements strategies to facilitate student learning.
  • Evaluation and Assessment
    • Evaluates student work and performance in relation to laboratory requirements.
    • Evaluates written work submitted by students as well as the performance of students in the laboratory in relation to laboratory requirements of courses.
    • Assesses and assigns final laboratory grades.
    • Provides additional assistance to students, outside of regularly scheduled laboratory times, in relation to course work.
    • Assists faculty with marking and invigilating final exams, when required.
    • Sets and assesses lab questionnaires, subject to the approval of the Dean.
    • Formulates staff schedule and lab exam schedules, subject to the approval of the Dean.
  • Preparation and Maintenance
    • Prepares materials for use in the laboratory, subject to the curricula approval of the Biology Faculty, including using multimedia computer applications.
    • Assesses new information and determines its relative value in relation to facilitating student learning in the laboratory.
    • Sets and evaluates laboratory quizzes and exams.
    • Maintains and updates audio tapes and handouts and arranges for printing of laboratory manuals.
    • Creates and/or initiates the development of supplementary instructional materials such as posters, information sheets, etc.
    • Researches, designs, and writes experiments for student use.
    • Cares for laboratory animals.
  • Other Related Duties
    • Creates, maintains, and updates report sheets.
    • Maintains records of biology laboratory grades.
    • Sets up laboratory equipment and demonstrations and ensures equipment is in good working order.
    • Participates as a discipline member in the revision of laboratory materials and manuals.
    • Maintains currency with respect to biology and biology laboratory instruction.
    • Performs Laboratory Technician II duties as required.

Requirements

  • A B.Sc. in Biology from a recognized post-secondary educational institution.
  • Excellent working knowledge of the operation and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and apparatus together with good working knowledge of safety measures related to the operation of the Biology laboratory, including WHMIS.
  • Good working knowledge of English (written and verbal).
  • A demonstrated ability to:
    • Communicate courteously and effectively in person, in writing, and over the telephone with students, faculty, administrators, staff, and stakeholders.
    • Establish priorities and achieve deadlines.
    • Effectively demonstrate proper laboratory techniques.
    • Maintain current knowledge in the field of biology.
    • Maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
