Job Summary
The Laboratory Facilitator, Biology position at Douglas College is responsible for providing laboratory instruction, evaluation, and supervision of students in the biology laboratory. This role requires a strong understanding of biology and laboratory procedures, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide Laboratory Instruction and Demonstration
- Instruct students in the laboratory component of college biology courses, subject to the curricula approval of the Biology Faculty.
- Assist students with difficulties related to the lecture component of courses.
- Demonstrate the correct use of equipment in the laboratory.
- Instruct students in safety procedures.
- Supervise students in the laboratory, ensuring compliance with safety procedures.
- Develop and implement strategies to facilitate student learning.
- Evaluate Student Work and Performance
- Evaluate written work submitted by students as well as the performance of students in the laboratory in relation to laboratory requirements of courses.
- Assess and assign final laboratory grades.
- Provide additional assistance to students, outside of regularly scheduled laboratory times, in relation to course work.
- Assist faculty with marking and invigilating final exams, when required.
- Set and assess lab questionnaires, subject to the approval of the Dean.
- Formulate staff schedule and lab exam schedules, subject to the approval of the Dean.
- Prepare Materials for Use in the Laboratory
- Assess new information and determine its relative value in relation to facilitating student learning in the laboratory.
- Set and evaluate laboratory quizzes and exams.
- Maintain and update audio tapes and handouts and arrange for printing of laboratory manuals.
- Create and/or initiate the development of supplementary instructional materials such as posters, information sheets, etc.
- Research, design, and write experiments for student use.
- Care for laboratory animals.
- Perform Other Related Duties
- Create, maintain, and update report sheets.
- Maintain records of biology laboratory grades.
- Set up laboratory equipment and demonstrations and ensure equipment is in good working order.
- Participate as a discipline member in the revision of laboratory materials and manuals.
- Maintain currency with respect to biology and biology laboratory instruction.
- Perform Laboratory Technician II duties as required.
Requirements
- A B.Sc. in Biology from a recognized post-secondary educational institution.
- Excellent working knowledge of the operation and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and apparatus together with good working knowledge of safety measures related to the operation of the Biology laboratory, including WHMIS.
- Good working knowledge of English (written and verbal).
- A demonstrated ability to:
- Communicate courteously and effectively in person, in writing, and over the telephone with students, faculty, administrators, staff, and the public.
- Establish priorities and achieve deadlines.
- Effectively demonstrate proper laboratory techniques.
- Maintain current knowledge in the field of biology.
- Maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
