McMaster Children's Hospital, situated in the west-end of Hamilton, ranks as the second largest pediatric hospital in Canada. We are proud to host Ontario's fastest-growing emergency department dedicated solely to children, along with one of the nation's most advanced neonatal intensive care units, and a variety of specialized programs addressing areas such as pediatric oncology, digestive health, and mental wellness.

Position Overview

The 3C Pediatric Medicine and Intermediate Care Unit at McMaster Children's Hospital is the largest unit within the facility, providing comprehensive inpatient care for pediatric patients with complex medical needs. Our modernized, state-of-the-art department operates in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, delivering specialized medical services to children facing intricate health challenges. We take pride in our innovative orientation programs, welcoming new nurses and ensuring a smooth transition from education to practice.

Our 3C Registered Nurses are responsible for the care of a diverse range of pediatric patients with complex health conditions, including congenital anomalies, endocrine disorders, gastrointestinal issues, cardiac concerns, respiratory ailments, musculoskeletal disorders, neurological conditions, and pediatric trauma. Each nurse benefits from a thorough onsite orientation program, guided by seasoned healthcare professionals and educators. As integral members of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, Registered Nurses coordinate and assess patient care, adhering to established nursing standards while collaborating within both the medical and level 2 step-down units. The 3C unit emphasizes skill development and expertise in a supportive, friendly environment that prioritizes the well-being and mentorship of our nursing staff.

Work Schedule

Shifts will include rotating days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications
  • Valid Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification or willingness to obtain within six months of hire
  • Proven knowledge of nursing care and disease processes affecting acutely ill children across various pediatric age groups
  • Demonstrated competence in managing the aforementioned pediatric populations, including skills in vascular access, cardio-respiratory monitoring, medication administration, and pediatric dialysis
  • Proficient in physical and psychosocial assessments tailored to the pediatric demographic
  • Ability to provide health education to pediatric patients and their families
  • Strong communication skills to engage with children and families in high-stress situations while collaborating within an interdisciplinary team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Leadership and delegation capabilities, along with the ability to organize and coordinate patient-centered care
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and corporate initiatives
  • Ability to adapt to rapid changes in patient conditions and workload

As a condition of employment, proof of full COVID-19 vaccination is required.
