McMaster Children's Hospital, situated in Hamilton, is recognized as the second largest pediatric hospital in Canada. We feature the most rapidly expanding emergency department dedicated to children in Ontario, alongside one of the country's most sophisticated neonatal intensive care units. Our facility offers a variety of specialized programs and clinics focusing on pediatric oncology, gastrointestinal disorders, and mental health.

Position Overview

The Pediatric Inpatient Surgical Care Unit at McMaster Children's Hospital provides acute tertiary and specialized surgical services to children. This unit is dedicated to creating a supportive and nurturing environment for our nursing staff, emphasizing their professional growth and development. Our team is committed to cultivating a community of specialized pediatric surgical nurses capable of delivering exceptional care to our patients.

As an integral member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, the Registered Nurse will utilize their clinical expertise in pediatric conditions requiring surgical intervention to deliver comprehensive nursing care to children aged 0-17 years, adhering to the practice standards and guidelines established by the regulatory body. Nurses will benefit from a thorough onsite orientation program, facilitated by experienced healthcare professionals, designed to enhance their surgical knowledge and instill confidence in caring for pediatric patients.

Work Schedule

12-hour shifts, rotating, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

  • Current Certificate of Registration with the regulatory body as a Registered Nurse.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
  • Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS) certification preferred or willingness to obtain within six months of hire.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of recent nursing experience in a tertiary pediatric hospital is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of pediatric illnesses, symptoms, and relevant interventions.
  • Demonstrated clinical expertise in pediatric psychosocial assessments, growth and development, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
  • Ability to act as a community liaison and provide access to support for children and families.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge and skills to provide health education for pediatric patients and their families, tailored to the clinic population's needs.

As a condition of employment, proof of full COVID-19 vaccination is required.
