McMaster Children's Hospital, situated in Hamilton, is recognized as the second largest pediatric hospital in Canada. We host the fastest-growing emergency department dedicated exclusively to children in Ontario, alongside one of the nation's most sophisticated neonatal intensive care units. Our facility encompasses a variety of specialized programs and clinics, each designed to address unique pediatric health needs, including pediatric oncology, gastrointestinal disorders, and mental health services.

Position Overview

The Pediatric Medicine Clinics at McMaster Children's Hospital deliver outpatient services to over 100,000 pediatric patients annually. This vibrant and fast-paced environment includes numerous sub-specialty clinics tailored to meet the diverse healthcare requirements of children, utilizing a family-centered approach. As a vital member of our multidisciplinary healthcare team, the Registered Nurse (RN) will leverage their clinical knowledge of pediatric conditions and complex medical issues to provide thorough nursing care and follow-up for children aged 0-17. The RN will also play a key role in facilitating clinic operations and coordinating community services and support.

Work Schedule

Monday to Friday; daytime hours, with occasional evenings and weekends as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Valid Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses as a Registered Nurse.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
  • Preferred: Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE).
  • Minimum of two years of recent experience in caring for children with endocrine disorders, ideally in a tertiary outpatient setting.
  • Proficient in pediatric vascular access techniques, including capillary blood sampling.
  • In-depth knowledge of pediatric diabetes management and care.
  • Demonstrated understanding of nursing care and disease processes affecting acutely ill children within the pediatric diabetes demographic.
  • Proven skills in physical and psychosocial assessments specific to the pediatric diabetes population.
  • Experience in health education for pediatric patients and their families, with the ability to collaborate with community resources.
  • Strong communication skills to engage with children and families in high-stress situations.
  • Ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership and delegation capabilities, along with the ability to organize and coordinate patient and family-centered care.
  • Capacity to adapt to rapid changes in patient conditions and workload.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.
