Position Overview

Under the guidance of the Manager, the Art Exhibition Specialist is tasked with the research, curation, and execution of exhibitions and community engagement initiatives at the Latcham Art Centre. This role is pivotal in bridging the gap between art and the community through audience development, promotional activities, and exhibition-related programs. The individual in this position is expected to prioritize health and safety in all operational aspects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a calendar of professional and community exhibitions along with related programming to enhance the visitor experience and connect art with the community. This may involve outreach to schools, festivals, and other community events.
  • Oversee all facets of exhibitions, including research, curation, artist liaison, promotion, curatorial writing, installation and deinstallation, event openings, social media strategies, virtual exhibition tours, and website updates.
  • Coordinate and manage Exhibition Opening events.
  • Assist visitors at the reception and contribute to audience engagement, with a willingness to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Design and implement exhibition-related educational programs such as talks, critiques, and guided tours.
  • Maintain the gallery space, ensuring proper upkeep, signage, supplies, and equipment are in order.
  • Schedule and supervise exhibition photography, ensuring proper documentation of events and exhibitions.
  • Manage digital image files, including archiving exhibition images and event documentation.
  • Support various events, including fundraising initiatives.
  • Contribute to grant writing and related administrative tasks.
  • Foster relationships with community groups, artists, funders, and staff to maximize attendance and participation in exhibitions.
  • Compile statistics and generate reports as needed.
  • As scheduled, oversee the efficient operations of the gallery in the absence of senior staff.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts or Art History.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in curatorial roles.
  • Proven experience in curating, installing, marketing exhibitions, and developing related programs.
  • Exceptional customer service skills with the ability to engage a diverse audience.
  • Strong understanding of reference interviewing and advisory techniques.
  • Advanced proficiency in computer applications and related software.
  • Excellent command of the English language, both written and verbal.
  • Strong communication, public relations, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships.
  • Outstanding organizational skills, capable of multitasking and prioritizing assignments.
  • Self-driven with a professional demeanor.
  • Possession of a valid Class G Driver's License and a reliable vehicle for gallery-related duties.
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.
