Join the City of Edmonton in enhancing the quality of life for its residents through a role that transcends mere enforcement. This position is dedicated to fostering community well-being and acting as a public representative and catalyst for positive change. Collaborating with neighborhoods, citizens, and local businesses, you will uphold community standards by inspecting and enforcing municipal regulations. Your effectiveness will be gauged by your capacity to deliver results in a respectful, inclusive, and service-oriented manner.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough investigations and enforce community standards and traffic regulations, particularly concerning snow and ice management.
  • Promote compliance and cooperation by educating the public on bylaws, policies, and procedures.
  • Address and manage a significant volume of complaints.
  • Engage with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Carry out investigations to ensure adherence to relevant legislative and regulatory requirements.
  • Collect and handle evidence appropriately.
  • Assess suitable enforcement measures and issue: written or verbal warnings, violation tickets, and snow removal directives.
  • Compile case files and court documentation; provide testimony in court as necessary.

Required Qualifications:

  • Completion of a recognized 2-year diploma in Police Studies, Security, Criminology, or a related field is essential.
  • A minimum of 1 year of robust customer service experience, including exposure to diverse bylaw and/or law enforcement scenarios.

Essential Skills:

  • Ability to successfully complete internal training, including Officer Safety tactics.
  • Knowledge of investigative methods, bylaws, enforcement authority, court processes, and evidence rules.
  • Capacity to exercise sound judgment, discretion, professionalism, and diplomacy in public interactions.
  • Proficient in conflict resolution and investigative techniques; adept at managing sensitive issues consistently.
  • Understanding of racism and discrimination in enforcement contexts, and awareness of how bias can affect behavior and decisions.
  • Professionalism and respectfulness in confrontational and challenging situations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking, report writing, and stakeholder presentations.
  • Adept at managing a high volume of work, with effective organization and prioritization skills.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace (Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides), Microsoft Office, and enforcement database systems.

Employment Conditions:

  • Current intermediate First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications are required.
  • Employment is contingent upon a satisfactory Criminal Record Check as mandated by the City of Edmonton; associated costs may apply.
  • A valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or equivalent) is necessary.
  • Personal vehicle use is required; business auto insurance for personal vehicle use on City matters must be obtained.
  • Applicants may be subject to testing.

Work Environment:

  • Ability to work in various weather conditions safely.
  • Willingness to work various shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Weekly work hours for this position are currently under review and may change in the future, with notifications provided in advance.
