EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY INDIGENOUS POLICY ADVISOR

The Indigenous Perspectives Society is dedicated to promoting and advocating for the rights and interests of Indigenous communities across British Columbia.

Founded to address the unique challenges faced by Indigenous Nations, the Society works closely with governmental bodies to influence policy and legislative changes that support Indigenous rights.

As a pivotal organization in the realm of Indigenous advocacy, the Society is expanding its capacity to effectively represent and advance the interests of Indigenous Peoples.

In this role, you will report to the Executive Director and work alongside the coordinator to spearhead our policy initiatives.

Your responsibilities will include evaluating the effects of provincial policies on Indigenous rights, engaging in collaborative policy development, facilitating discussions among stakeholders, preparing briefing documents, creating presentation materials, and assisting the Executive Director in achieving the Society's objectives.

This role also involves liaising with partners, managing files, taking detailed meeting notes, drafting correspondence, and organizing logistics for meetings and events.

As part of our dynamic organization, you will play a key role in shaping our internal processes and operational strategies.

We seek a highly motivated self-starter with an innovative mindset, who is detail-oriented and passionate about creating impactful policy and government documents.

Your thorough approach ensures that every policy, guideline, and communication produced is clear, precise, and effective.

With a strong attention to detail and a proactive attitude, you will contribute significantly to the development of policies and documents that influence the future.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct research and provide insights on the implications of provincial policies on Indigenous rights.
  • Support collaborative groups in the co-development of policies and materials to further the implementation of Indigenous rights.
  • Perform both quantitative and qualitative analyses to inform policy development.
  • Draft policies, guidelines, frameworks, and other governmental materials for policy working groups.
  • Assist the Executive Director with the creation of organizational policies as necessary.
Coordination and Administration:

Facilitate discussions with local governments, provincial ministries, federal departments, and other stakeholders to gather input and share information.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with various levels of government, non-governmental organizations, and Indigenous communities.

Provide administrative and logistical support for both in-person and virtual meetings and events.

Assist in onboarding new members of working groups.

Qualifications:
  • University degree in a relevant field or equivalent education and experience.
  • A graduate degree is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with Indigenous organizations or remote Indigenous communities.
  • Understanding of governmental functions and interactions at various levels.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with strong verbal and written communication abilities in English.
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and video conferencing tools.

Additional assets include:

  • Experience drafting agreements, legislation, policies, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of reconciliation principles and their implications for Indigenous Peoples.
  • Experience in event and meeting planning.
  • Ability to work remotely with occasional face-to-face meetings.

We value diversity in our workplace and encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds, with a preference for Indigenous applicants in accordance with relevant human rights legislation.
