Job Opportunity: Legislative Counsel, Single Legal Regulator Transition

The Law Society of British Columbia is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Legislative Counsel to assist with the transition to Legal Professions BC. This is a temporary, full-time position with a duration of 18 months, but an extension may be required depending on the transition period.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Consultation and Collaboration: Oversee and coordinate consultation and collaboration with the Society of Notaries Public of British Columbia and the BC Paralegal Association, along with other organizations, to ensure development of proposed first rules and a code of professional conduct for eventual approval by the transitional board and the transitional Indigenous council.
  2. Policy Development: Collaborate and coordinate engagement with operational groups within the Law Society and the Notaries Society to develop proposals with respect to necessary rules for Legal Professions BC.
  3. Project Management: Create proposals in principle for the rules required to regulate the legal professions effectively on amalgamation day and ensure acceptance by operational groups and the transitional board and the transitional Indigenous council.
  4. Support Services: Provide assistance with other aspects of the transition process as determined by the Senior Advisor.

Qualifications:

  • A member in good standing of the Law Society of BC or eligible for membership.
  • Familiarity with policy development and presentation, as well as experience in managing policy projects and coordinating a team in developing policy proposals.
  • Experience in reviewing and revising professional regulation rules and professional codes of conduct is an asset.
  • Project management experience and skills are essential.
  • Superior writing and drafting skills, excellent interpersonal, advocacy and communication skills, demonstrated capacity to work within the governance structure of the Law Society, familiarity with policy development and presentation, and demonstrated collaboration and coordination abilities.
