Primary function

**Home Location**: Ottawa Integrated Legal Services Office (ILSO)

**Reports to**: Manager, Integrated Legal Services
Key accountabilities

**Under lawyer supervision where necessary**:
Representing clients before the Immigration Division.
Representing clients before the Landlord and Tenant Board.
Representing clients before the Ontario Disability Appeal Board.
Interviewing clients in person, via video and at detention centres.
Supporting the Detention Review Program for the Eastern District.
Finding alternatives to detention.
Drafting legal submissions, correspondence and affidavits.
Explaining refugee determination processes and immigration processes and procedures to clients and community groups.
Assessing client needs, including the early identification of vulnerable clients, and providing referrals to appropriate internal and external services.
Contacting and liaising with other service providers (physicians, interpreters, professionals, mental health workers, etc) to arrange appointments and supportive documentation for clients.
Preparing IRCC forms and BOC narratives for refugee claimants as required
Providing representation before other IRB divisions as required
Assisting lawyers and other LAO staff on client files as required - this may include Family law files and Criminal files, on occasion, for clients at OCDC.
File management as per LAO requirements, including recording all case information in the appropriate case management/docketing system.
Participating in professional developmental opportunities for the purposes of enhancing knowledge and skills.
Required skills & experience
Must possess a paralegal license (Member in good standing, Law Society of Ontario)
Experience representing individuals before the Immigration Division at Detention Review hearings or at the Landlord and Tenant Board considered a strong asset.
Current knowledge of immigration and refugee processes
Current knowledge of landlord and tenant processes
Well-developed interview skills in a social service environment
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for dealing with vulnerable clients, lawyers, paralegals, legal assistants and other external stakeholders.
Proven ability to exercise sound judgment when encountering stressful situations.
Proven experience in providing
Ability to work cooperatively with other staff and external stakeholders.
Intermediate skill level in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook and Excel) and the ability to enter and retrieve information in a client service and case management system (PeopleSoft, Legal Files)
Ability to work with mínimal supervision, to multi-task and to work well under pressure.
Demonstrated ability to use latest communication technologies including smartphones, Zoom, Teams.
Police clearance for access to the CBSA detention facility and OCDC will be a necessary requirement.
