Job Summary

The Research Assistant works within the Research Team in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Care at Vancouver General Hospital, within the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics, UBC. The Research Assistant will be responsible for assisting with multiple research and quality assurance projects from protocol development through to publication of study results. This will include but are not limited to data management, literature search, ethics and grant submission, patient recruitment and follow up and clinical data collection.

1. Assist the Primary Investigator and Research Manager on all aspects of a clinical research study from protocol design, ethics and regulatory submissions, data collection/entry, and analysis.

2. Assist with planning and implementation of research projects.

4. Provide support with analysis and interpretation of data.

5. Assist with Research Ethics Board (REB) submissions and amendment forms (e.g. RISe, VCHRI)

6. Prepare documentation for grant submissions.

7. Assist Research Manager in maintaining regulatory files.

8. Provide support for the operational aspects of research within the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Care at Vancouver General Hospital.

10. Track and report on progress of research studies.

11. Act as primary liaison between industry-sponsored studies and the research team.

12. Assist Research Manager to create, forecast, and maintain project budgets and manage accounts receivables and deliverables.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The Research Assistant is required to conduct all research activities in an ethical manner following approved guidelines. Confidentiality must be respected when dealing with research data. Errors made could influence the ability of research staff to meet critical deadlines, as well as compromise the results of research projects, and therefore impact the credibility of the Investigators and the Department. As data and results may be disseminated to other research partners, their results and credibility can be negatively influenced by the researcher's error.

Supervision Received

The Research Assistant will receive general direction from the Research Manager and Research Director(s) and other Principal Investigators. The Research Assistant will be expected to exercise a considerable amount of initiative in fulfilling a work plan.

None, but may explain work sequence to others.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in a clinical research environment. High degree of computer literacy, including familiarity with Microsoft Office and REDCap. Understanding of research methods and knowledge of clinical data is an asset.

Exceptional communication skills, both oral and written.

Excellent interpersonal skills including conflict management/ crisis resolution skills.

Clinical experience in a hospital setting would be a strong asset.
