Job Summary
This position is located at the British Columbia Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU), a provincially networked organization with a mandate to develop, help implement, and evaluate evidence-based approaches to substance use and addiction. As a University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine Centre, the BCCSU’s vision is to transform substance use policies and care in BC by translating research into education and evidence-based care guidance. By supporting the collaborative development of evidence-based policies, guidelines and standards, the BCCSU seeks to improve the integration of best practices and care across the continuum of substance use, thereby serving all British Columbians. The BCCSU seeks to achieve these goals through integrated activities of its three core functions: research and evaluation, education and training, and clinical care guidance.
Organizational Status
The Research Coordinator will report to the Principal Investigators, and will work closely with
other research staff on a regular basis. This position is located at the British Columbia Centre on Substance Use.
Work Performed
1. Coordinates development, implementation and maintenance of qualitative research studies.
2. Leads research projects, including identifying and implementing strategic research goals.
3. Design, develop and implement study data collection protocols.
4. Prepare ethical submissions, regulatory documents and research approvals for the UBC Research Ethics Board and liaise with Research Ethics Board as needed.
5. Manage research participant recruitment, manage the consent process, oversees and conducts data collections activities including interviews involving qualitative topic guides and ethnographic observational research.
6. Ensure enrolment expectations.
7. Supervise staff adherence to participant confidentiality and implementation of research ethics approved study protocol.
8. Assist with supervising research staff (e.g., Peer Research Assistants) including overseeing execution of protocols and procedures, providing orientation and training, monitoring staff performance and providing feedback to the Principal Investigators.
9. Design and oversee the maintenance of participant and data databases.
10. Use research software (e.g., NVivo) to code and analyze data.
11. Manage study budgets.
12. Generate progress and interim reports for presentation.
13. Assist the Principal Investigators with various administrative tasks associated with the day-to-day research operations.
14. Support, develop and evaluate strategies that encourage community participation in research and research-related activities.
15. Liaise with community stakeholders to facilitate knowledge translation to and/or between a wide range of organization activities and groups.
16. Contribute to the design and creation of communications and public relations tools about research studies (e.g. flyers, posters, other materials) in order to recruit participants.
17. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position exercises professional judgment and initiative in the management of research, including the design and conduct of qualitative data collection, the training of research staff and the maintenance of participant confidentiality. The incumbent is accountable for the efficient management of projects. Errors made could influence the ability of researchers to interpret data correctly, delay the timely completion of work, and thus compromise the results of research projects. Errors made could also impact the security of participant confidentiality and study data. This would impact the credibility of the Principal Investigators and other research team investigators.
Supervision Received
Works independently and reports directly to the Principal Investigators. Collaborates with research staff in implementing research studies and receives direction and guidance from the Principal Investigators.
