Job Summary

This position’s primary purpose in the lab will be to manage all facets of daily operations, maintenance, and finances of a research laboratory with a proven track record of outstanding achievements and contributions in translational biomedical research.

60% of this role is lab management and 40% will be providing support for molecular biology projects related to the behavioral, biochemical and neuropathological characterization of mouse models of Huntington Disease and the pre-clinical testing of novel therapeutics. The role will also entail carrying out histochemical techniques on tissue samples.

Organizational Status

This position is for a full-time lab manager of the Hayden Lab and will be reporting directly to the Principle Investigator of the lab, Dr. Michael Hayden and will work closely with the post-doctoral fellows, fellow technicians, graduate students and administration personnel in the Hayden Lab.

Work Performed

Lab Management duties (60%):

- Developing and writing novel protocols and safety procedures including animal and biosafety
protocols through the UBC rise system
- Ensuring proper use and maintenance of equipment
- Troubleshooting equipment including: cryostat, centrifuges, shakers, thermocyclers, pulse field,
electrophoresis equipment, biosafety cabinets, dissecting microscope and computer set up
- Operation and maintenance of highly specialized equipment including: cryostat, Ultra low temperature freezers, fluorescentmicroscope, and confocal microscope
- Participation in the orientation, training and supervision of junior technicians and students
- Overseeing the progress of projects and participating in complex research activities including both the technical and administrative aspects
- Demonstrates equipment, techniques and procedures to lab personnel
- Managing safe handling and proper disposal of chemicals, biohazardous, and infectious materials in accordance with WCB and WHIMIS
- Participating in safety committee
- Managing laboratory safety (including training and certification) and chemical compliance
- Working closely with the lab’s Finance Manager, the lab manager will ensure that daily financial operations of the laboratory including: managing credit card purchases made by the lab;
- Oversee daily operational activities of the lab including inventory and general organization

Technical Neuropath Duties (40%)
- Perform cell culture specializing in complex primary neuronal cultures.
- Perform molecular biology techniques such as western blotting, immunoprecipitation, an/or qPCR
- Harvest tissue samples from rodents and process biological tissue for downstream molecular biology and histological analysis
- Prepare cryostat and vibratome tissue sections
- Perform routine stains (eg H&E, Cresyl Violet) and immunohistochemical stains of tissue sections, particularly of mouse brain sections
- Use fully automated high-end bright field and fluorescence microscopes, including complex associated software
- Perform quantitative image analysis and stereology
- Work with trainees develop and troubleshoot new staining techniques
- Design and write standard operating procedures for developed methodology
- Analyze results and provides recommendations to supervisor on reasons for variances problems/issues
- Perform other related duties as needed or requested.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The general scope and direction of the research is under the jurisdiction of the principal investigator.

This position works independently, reporting bi-weekly to Dr. Michael Hayden during individual

meetings and at lab meetings.

Supervision Received

This position does involve training and orientation of trainees and research assistants.
