BCIT’s **School of Transportation** is seeking a **temporary, full-time (1.0 **FTE**) Systems Administrator. **This position provides support services, maintenance, and development of information systems required for the delivery of programs in the School of Transportation. The primary responsibilities include administration and maintenance of Local Area Networks (LANs) for the School of Transportation; web-site maintenance and development; LAN administration and solution development activities for the user groups; and service and support for various testing systems. These activities, in turn, support the development, management and delivery of web-based programs, full and part-time programs, Distance Education, and Industry Services courses.
Other duties may be included under direction of the Manager, School Operations.

**DUTIES** **AND**
**RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- General responsibilities include performing a variety of PC and LAN support functions to programs throughout the School, including:
- Participating and/or completing the configuration, setting-up, and installations of LAN’s, PC’s, and workstations
- Providing PC and LAN hardware and software product support to clients
- Investigating, diagnosing, and resolving LAN and/or network problems impacting service levels by either repairing or coordinating internal support to resolve system problems
- Scheduling and/or conducting LAN maintenance outages, system upgrades, etc.
- Installing, configuring, and programming computer software and hardware i.e., CD-ROMs, printers, scanners, digital input devices, etc.
Participates in developing and ensuring PC and LAN workstation standards are maintained in accordance with BCIT standards such as:
- Establishing standardized training requirements
- Testing processing formatting standards, and PC and LAN hardware and software configuration standards
- Determining and coordinating PC and LAN security arrangements
- Evaluating new PC and LAN hardware and software releases. Analyzing existing systems for weaknesses, performance/capacity problems, effects on installed PC/LAN products, etc.
- Preparing reports recommending hardware, system, and software enhancements, upgrades, etc. including costing, and follows up to implement approved recommendations
- Specifying computer hardware and software needs and recommends and provides principle input in decisions relating to the purchase of this computer equipment, and proprietary software
- Preparing and providing training, technical advice and direction to system clients, PC users and designated coordinators within each department.
Specific responsibilities towards the School of Transportation include:
- Installing, administering, maintaining, and developing solutions for the LAN system and information systems in the programs areas i.e., All-data, Mitchell, etc.
- Designing, programming, and maintaining other computer systems used by the program areas, i.e. ALTROM parts locators, computer inventory systems, etc.
- Performing as a member of project teams in system upgrades and solution development projects
- Maintaining and monitoring the use of computer equipment in the program areas
- Providing service and repairs for hardware and software for the remote campuses
Specific responsibilities towards the web-site include:
- Designing, developing, and programming the Transportation web-site ensuring it is current in both information and the use of technology. Provide on-going support to the web-site to ensure it is current in terms of information, and the use of technology. Ensures the web-site is compliant with BCIT standards/format.
- Works with staff to maintain the efficiency and quality of the program delivery.
- Supporting the development and delivery of full-time and part-time programs, Distance Education, and Industry Services courses on a web-based platform
- Works with staff to develop the course structure for materials delivered via the web i.e., video audio and live classroom events to remote campus via Real G2 server system
- Programs both internal and external linkages to and from BCIT main web-site
- Programs 3D interactive web environments for virtual classrooms i.e., Active Worlds Server
- Provides advise, guidance, and service on web technology and how it can be utilized in an educational environment
Specific responsibilities towards the testing systems include:
- Providing direction on the appropriate software use
- Troubleshooting problems that occur on both on hardware and software which may include contacting software companies as required
- Providing backup/restoration procedures on a regular basis, and initiating recovery procedures on system as required
- Providing training and support to users on hardware and software
- Ensuring accurate licensing
- Maintaining security by determining access levels and setting up acce
