Join the Animal Health and Assurance Branch of the Government of Alberta as an Assistant Chief Provincial Veterinarian (ACPV). Reporting directly to the Chief Provincial Veterinarian (CPV), you will play a crucial role in ensuring the well-being of Alberta's livestock and safeguarding public health. As the ACPV, you will contribute to the development and implementation of animal health programs, provide leadership during emergency disease responses, and represent Alberta at provincial, national, and international meetings. This is a unique opportunity to use your expertise to shape policies, collaborate with industry partners, and make a positive difference in the livestock industry.

**Key Responsibilities**:

- Federal/Provincial/Territorial policy work: Contribute to the development and implementation of effective provincial and national animal health programs, policies, and legislation.
- Complex One-Health analysis: Utilize leading-edge scientific principles to develop and oversee animal health programs that impact industry sustainability, public health, and market access.
- Strategic vision: Provide input into the strategic direction of the Animal Health and Assurance Branch and lead Branch and Section teams.
- Familiarity with animal health: Assist the CPV in ensuring effective communication of Alberta's livestock herd's health status by providing information to trade delegations, updating fact sheets, and conducting media interviews.

**Additional Responsibilities**:

- Assist in the maintenance and enforcement of animal health legislation and regulations.
- Help maintain and implement animal disease surveillance and response plans.
- Ensure effective emergency preparedness for emerging and foreign animal diseases.
- Develop and share information on the health status of Alberta's livestock herd and associated disease surveillance and control programs.
- Build relationships with key stakeholders in the animal health and public health fields at local, national, and international levels.
- Participate in committees and meetings related to animal disease issues.
- Provide leadership during emergency animal disease responses.
- Represent the Ministry in federal-provincial-territorial meetings related to animal health and welfare.

**Qualifications**:
**Minimum Requirements for the Role**:
University graduation in Veterinary Science, plus a Masters Degree in area of specialization, plus five years related experience or equivalent*.
- Equivalency: PhD/ Doctor of Veterinary Medicine level training considered in lieu of experience/education on a one-for-one basis.

**Requirements**:

- Specific knowledge of the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and control of endemic and foreign livestock diseases, especially those important to public health, food safety, and market access for livestock and livestock products.
- Awareness of national and international animal health policies.
- Awareness of the current animal health status of Alberta's livestock herd.
- Comprehension of the complexities of modern livestock production methods and their impact on animal health and welfare.
- Knowledge of the principles and limitations of diagnostic tests.
- Knowledge of the principles of epidemiology and awareness of risk assessment (analysis, management, and communication) and statistical methods.
- Eligibility to be licensed by the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association.
