**About Us**:
The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) prosecutes persons charged with Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, and provincial statute offences. The ACPS promotes safe communities by vigorously prosecuting cases involving serious and violent crime and working with individuals and organizations in the community to identify and implement improved and alternative approaches to the administration of criminal justice.

The Advanced Projects and Traffic Office (APTO) is a newly created branch within the ACPS that consolidates Provincial Prosecutors with the Advanced Project teams. The purpose of this branch is to increase justice system capacity, improve regulatory enforcement, and improve overall access to justice. The APTO is also dedicated to enhancing current traffic court operations by providing consistent and dedicated management that can be applied to provincial prosecutors across the Province. By consolidating with the new advanced project team, new and innovative technology can be applied seamlessly across the Province.

The APTO also provides prosecution and advanced project policy advice and direction to prosecutors, law enforcement agencies and other justice partners and enhances the prosecutors’ ability to prosecute various Provincial Statues by seeking meaningful amendments to the Criminal Code and related statutes. The APTO also participates in the development of provincial statutes, policies, or programs dealing with the administration of criminal justice within the Province that does not relate exclusively to the Crown.

**Role**:
The Advanced Projects and Traffic Office (APTO) with the Alberta Crown Prosecution Services Division (ACPS) has an opporunity for a Provincial Prosecutor to join our Prosecutions team in the Edmonton and Calgary area.

**Locations**

**Edmonton and area**: Office located in Edmonton. Travel may be required to variouse court locations.

**Calgary and area**: Office Located in Calgary. Travel may be required to variouse court locations.

This position supports the Ministry’s commitment to safe communities and advancement of traffic safety through provision of education and consultation to enforcement agencies and other stakeholders in relation to provincial offences and charges, court procedures, rules of evidence, and various requirements essential to ensuring effective prosecutions. The Provincial Prosecutor also liaises regularly with the public, victims and other stakeholders to provide consultation and exchange information aimed at upholding and preserving confidence in the administration of justice within the province.

Specific accountabilities of the position include:

- Manages the prosecution of provincial statute summary conviction offence cases from initiation to disposition in Provincial Court and Provincial Youth Court.
- Screens adult and youth cases to ensure there is public interest to proceed and determine the sufficiency of evidence and appropriateness of charges.
- Prepares adult and youth provincial summary statute cases for trial.
- Reviews Provincial case files to determine appropriateness of charges, witnesses, trial time, areas of special attention and elections; determines complexity of cases and adjourns matters as appropriate to assure sufficient lead-time based on evaluation of cases.
- Assists in providing training, lectures and presentations to enforcement agencies and other stakeholders relating to provincial offences, court procedures, rules of evidence, and associated legislation.

**Qualifications**:
University graduation in a related field plus 4 years progressively responsible related experience working with the Justice System in some capacity, for example as a Legal Assistant, Paralegal, in Policing, or as a Provincial Prosecutor.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education

Asset:

- Post-Secondary education in law enforcement will be considered an asset as will experience with court processes and experience dealing with Justice System stakeholders.
- Experience with Alberta Provincial Regulatory matters such as Traffic Safety Act, Gaming Liquor and Cannabis Act, Wildlife Act will be considered an asset

**A valid Alberta Motor Vehicle Operators License is a requirement. Travel within the province is required**
