- Reporting to the Director, Public Affairs and Communications, the Planning and Communications Officer engages employees and maximizes community awareness of North Island College through co-ordination and implementation of NIC’s communications and public affairs activities.
- The Planning and Communications Officer performs a variety of communications research, writing, editing and tasks to communicate NIC’s story to employees, government, and external audiences. This includes advocacy and communications for government and media relations, employee and external communications, the corporate website, publications and social media. The incumbent easily handles multiple projects and tasks within a fast-paced environment and is open to constant change and challenge. The Planning and Communications Officer believes in NIC’s mission and vision, and, as a communications expert, supports others in bringing NIC’s identity, strategic direction, and brand to life.**Position Competencies**

**Duties & Responsibilities**
- Working closely with the Director of Public Relations and Communications, the Planning and Communications Officer:

**Strategy & Planning**
- 1. Supports the alignment and integration of public affairs activities, collaboration and communication processes, to align with NIC’s Strategic Plan, vision, mission and objectives.
2. Supports the development of policies, guidelines, projects and strategies to guide communications, as well as public affairs.
3. Assists in the maintenance of annual work plans, including project-tracking tools and reporting mechanisms.
4. Supports the creation of collaborative, engaging employee communications to support the People Plan and Employee Engagement, including the mobilization of recommendations within NIC’s employee communication audit.
5. Supports the implementation of NIC’s editorial policy and non-graphic editorial style, especially with respect to employee, advocacy and external audiences.
6. Respects confidentiality of leadership, colleagues and external partners in the planning, developing and supporting NIC initiatives.
7. Ensures appropriate retention, access and retrieval of documents and reports related to the duties and functions of the position, including documents of a confidential nature.
8. Ensures ongoing professional development of knowledge and abilities through self-development.

- **Writing & Communications**

**1. **Works with colleagues within the college to deliver communications, projects, advocacy campaigns and publications to support the Director, Public Affairs and Communications.
2. Provides a full range of compelling written, editing and publishing services in support of NIC’s employee and external communications, publications, and priorities.
3. Writes, prepares, and distributes media releases, media kits, fact sheets, print and electronic materials in collaboration with Public Affairs and Communications Team.
4. Develops and creates speaking and briefing notes, key messages, advocacy documents, summaries, submissions, campus plans, accountability reports and relevant communications materials to support NIC governance and operational decision-making.
5. Accurate reporting of information to multi-media specialists, ensuring effective proofreading and fact checking to ensure clear, concise, accurate materials.
6. Researches, plans, writes, proofreads, edits and finalises publications and web pages. May also serve as a project lead on key publications including guiding development and working with members of a production team, external contacts, designers, developers, and other writers.
- **Public Affairs & Outreach**
- 1. Collaborates with colleagues to foster relations and proactively identifies opportunities to enhance awareness and understanding of the important role North Island College and its initiatives, including the implementation of a comprehensive public affairs program.
2. Maximizes media opportunities at local, provincial and national levels.
3. Supports the development of a proactive media outreach strategy to enhance NIC’s relationships with key media, including the writing and development of media
