The Post-Secondary Peer Support Specialist is a member of the inter-professional team, responsible for providing support to post-secondary students within the Recovery College Framework. Integral to the title and responsibilities of this position is the requirement that the Peer Support Specialist share their recent lived experience with post-secondary institutions (university or college) and mental health challenges to inspire Students on the shared journey of discovery, recovery and hope.

**KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Provide expertise and consultation from a mental health consumer’s perspective.
- Utilize co-design and appropriate program development techniques to develop and co-deliver recovery college curricula within the post-secondary (college/ university) context.
- Works with students virtually to facilitate co-produced wellness courses within the post-secondary student population at identified schools.
- Support future recovery college development in post-secondary institutions
- Establish and oversee the post-secondary recovery college community of practice
- Coordinate and oversee the evaluation of post-secondary recovery colleges.
- Utilize a strengths-based approach to promote health and wellness
- Actively participate in stigma reduction and raising awareness of current issues in mental health.
- Qualifications Required and Preferred**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Post-secondary education in a related area of study (i.e. mental health, social sciences or human services) and a minimum of three years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ontario Peer Development Initiative (OPDI) Level 1preferred
- Current CPR certification
- Valid Ontario Driver’s License
- Group Facilitation skills preferred
- WRAP, ASIST certification preferred

KNOWLEDGE:

- Sound knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act, social service benefits and related legislation in Ontario
- Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook), as well as the internet.
- Demonstrated knowledge of mental health system
- Knowledge of community resources/services and local networking
- Knowledge of research methods and program evaluation
- Strong, experiential knowledge of recovery from mental illness
- High level of self-awareness
- ability to critically appraise own performance
- Willingness to support people with a range of needs to meet their recovery goals

**VARIOUS ASSIGNMENTS WITHIN THIS ROLE**:

- Recovery College Peer Specialist:
- Conduct interviews and recovery assessments with prospective students within the recovery college to identify independent learning goals.
- Manage student appointments independently and connect with student referrals.
- Act as a tutor to prospective students in assisting in course selection, recovery college program navigation and other identified learning activities.
- Develop learning objectives and deliver course content within the recovery college.
- Communicate and collaborate with the college registrar and Recovery College Leader to ensure timely response to filled courses, attendance issues, resource requests, student safety concerns, etc.
- Assist with program evaluation duties as required.
- Transitional Discharge Peer Specialist:
- Identification of service users requiring transitional discharge support
- Manage caseload of service users being discharged back into the community.
- Meet with and assess recovery-oriented and community re-integration needs of service users awaiting discharge.
- Engage with service users prior to discharge, during discharge transition and up to six-week post-discharge from inpatient stay within the hospital.
- Provide emotional and practical support to service users throughout discharge transition in order to assist them in realizing their recovery and community re-integration goals.
- Assist service users in identifying and leveraging both internal and external resources in order to establish meaningful roles and connections within the mental healthcare system and the community.
- Communicate and collaborate with other members of the treatment team to provide comprehensive care designed to enhance the experience and individual recovery of service users transitioning back into the community.
