Red Deer Housing Authority (RDHA) seeks a community-minded individual to join its Board of Directors. The Red Deer Housing Authority board is the corporation’s governing body vested with the authority to manage the corporation’s business and affairs, and board members have a fiduciary responsibility to act in the corporation's best interests. This is consistent with the _Alberta Housing Act_ and associated _Management Body Operation and Administration Regulation_. Our organization relies on citizens with broad perspectives and knowledge to provide guidance and direction to fulfill its vision, mission, core values and strategic priorities.

**The Organization and Its Mandate**

Established in 1971, Red Deer Housing Authority is a housing management body incorporated by _Ministerial Order_ under the _Alberta Housing Act_ that provides social and affordable housing to over 1,000 households in Red Deer and the surrounding area. The purpose of these programs is to enable the efficient provision of a basic level of housing accommodations for persons, who because of financial, social, or other circumstances, require assistance to obtain or maintain housing accommodation. Red Deer Housing Authority’s _vision _is to have communities with housing for all. Our _mission _is to provide housing solutions that address diverse community needs.

**Board Responsibilities and Expectations**

The Red Deer Housing Authority Board of Directors is a _Policy Governance Board_emphasizing vision, the optimum balance between empowerment and rigorous accountability, strategic leadership, the distinction between Board and Executive roles, and proactive decisions. As a member of a governance board of directors, your role will be to:

- ensure the organization efficiently operates and administers the housing accommodation under its authority within the powers and duties set out in the _Ministerial Order_ and meet the obligations of its mandate as a Management Body under the _Alberta Housing Act._
- provide direction and engage the Chief Administrative Officer responsible to the Board in determining the strategic direction for the organization, effectively managing the organization’s resource portfolio, sustaining an effective organizational culture, emphasizing ethical practices, and establishing balanced organizational controls.
- approve business and strategic plans, annual operating and capital budgets.
- develop and evaluate the policies and programs of the management body, consistent with the powers, duties and functions as expressly given to it under the _Alberta Housing Act._
- review materials and prepare for meetings, participate in discussions and decision-making, and honour decisions of the Board. Members are also expected to serve on Board committees.

**Appointment & Term of Office**

The Red Deer Housing Authority Board and the City of Red Deer appoint Board members. Board members are appointed for 4 years, renewable to a maximum of eight consecutive years.

**Meetings**

The Board meets at least once a month; the Chair may call additional meetings. The Board meetson the fourth Monday of each month at 5 p.m.

**Remuneration**

Board members serve in a voluntary capacity and do not receive any remuneration. Members may be reimbursed for reasonable out-of-pocket expenses related to Board activities. There is a sitting honorarium provided to Board Members in accordance with a Board approved policy.

**Eligibility and Qualifications**
- At least 18 years of age
- A resident of any community covered by RDHA who has lived three (3) months in the area before the appointment.
- A Canadian Citizen, a Permanent Resident, a Refugee sponsored by the Canadian Government or has applied for Refugee Status and received confirmation of acceptance of Immigration Status.
- Meet the requirements for appointment as set out in the Management _Body Operation and Administration Regulation_under the _Alberta Housing Act._
- Members must have experience, expertise or qualifications in board governance, knowledge of the housing industry and/or provincial government social housing sector, organizational and business knowledge, finance and community and social responsibility.
