**Working for the Division of Gastroenterology**

As a major referral centre, the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Alberta Hospital has a highly specialized consultation and advanced therapeutic endoscopy facility, a state-of-the-art in-patient unit, and highly skilled Gastroenterologists and gastrointestinal scientists. Today, the Division has clinical specialists and teachers at each major Edmonton hospital, performs more than 25,000 advanced endoscopic surgical procedures annually and has developed internationally recognized programs in inflammatory bowel disease, peptic ulcer disease, liver failure and liver transplantation, viral liver disease and human nutrition.

**Position**

**Duties**
- Design research study documents, including informed consent forms, and maintain electronic data collection sheets (e.g., Redcap).
- Conduct comprehensive literature reviews to support research study drafting and prepare research protocols for approval by principal investigators.
- Screen outpatient charts in the EMR system to assess patient eligibility for study enrollment and manage patient recruitment and follow-up activities.
- Administer study questionnaires and address participant inquiries via telephone or in-person, ensuring ongoing participant compliance.
- Prepare and distribute research study kits for patient use, including stool collection kits and blood requisition forms.
- Develop and analyze data using statistical software (e.g., SPSS) and assist in designing patient education materials.
- Organize and schedule regular project update meetings with principal investigators, which may be conducted in-person or via teleconference.
- Assist in preparing and submitting grant proposals, abstracts for academic conferences, manuscripts for publication, and delivering presentations at meetings and conferences.

**Minimum Qualifications**
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Public Health, Nutrition, or a related scientific field.
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Excel for data handling, PowerPoint for presentations, and Word for document creation.
- Ability to write clearly and think critically, with a demonstrable skill for explaining complex ideas simply. Experience in academic writing or coursework involving research is a plus.
- Strong verbal communication and interviewing skills, comfortable interacting in clinical or research environments.

**Preferred Qualifications**
- Willingness to work both independently and as part of a research team, involving peers, senior researchers, and other healthcare professionals.
- 1-2 years of experience in a research setting, particularly those involving medical or clinical data.
- Familiarity with electronic database systems like RedCap and EMR systems such as ConnectCare
- Basic understanding of medical terms, especially useful if gained previous roles in healthcare settings.
