**LUSO Community Services is a neighbourhood resource centre dedicated to promoting inclusiveness, well-being and prosperity in the London community. We provide programs and services in the London community for children, youth, families, and seniors of culturally diverse and ethnic backgrounds.**

**LITERACY PROGRAM FACILITATOR**

**THIS IS A FULL TIME PERMANENT ROLE- IT IS NOT A SUMMER POSITION**

**Reporting**: The Literacy Program Facilitator will report directly to LUSO’s Executive Director. This position will work closely with other LUSO team members of the Children, Youth and Families division, as well as community partners and other key stakeholders.

**KEY PROGRAMS**:
**Shared Beginnings**:focuses on literacy skills of single, immigrant and newcomer parents and enhances daily language and literacy interaction with children. It is a preventative project aimed at children 0-4 who are at risk of developing future literacy problems**. **Shared beginnings operates two mornings a week from 9:00-12:00 at different community locations. It is an in-person program for families.

**Family Literacy & Numeracy Events**:community events geared to families with children up to 12 years of age to encourage literacy and numeracy development. This includes organizing annual Family Literacy Day event at the end of January. Literacy family and numeracy events are offered at different times during the year and at various community locations.

**HERd Zine League**: primary objectives for HERd Zine League is to create a safe, creative space that; champions women’s writing and art; gives marginalized individuals a platform and voice by amplifying the voices of girls, trans and non-binary youth; and challenges how girls and women are portrayed in popular media. Participants, ages 9-13 years old, develop their artistic skills through workshops and demonstrations while also building the critical media literacy skills needed to decode the messages, both overt and implicit, in various media that can have a significant influence on youth behaviour and self-esteem. Participants will use their individual strengths (writing, drawing, collage, poetry, etc.) to produce zines, homemade artistic magazines, to be distributed in the community as an active way to share their own voice.

**Prism Art**: This program is for youth aged 8-12 and uses various forms of art to support literacy and numeracy development for participants.

**Family Prism Art**:This program is for families with children up to 7 years of age and uses various forms of art to support literacy and numeracy development

**Kitchen Kids**: This program is for children ages 8-12 and includes activities to help children develop literacy and numeracy skills through cooking.

**Kindercooks**: This program is for families with children up to 7 years of age and includes activities to help children develop literacy and numeracy skills through cooking

**Books and Breakfast**: summer program only
- incorporating literacy based activities into breakfast program offered during July and August. Activities are for children up to 12 years of age.

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Develop, plan and implement targeted literacy and numeracy programming (weekly) to support children, youth and families
- Plan and implement family literacy & numeracy events (monthly)
- Develop resources, evaluations, workshops and activities related to program needs
- Establish and maintain partnerships and relationships with various community partners
- Family Centres, Libraries, TVDSB. LDCSB etc.
- Conduct outreach activities to connect with children and families in the neighbourhood
- Manage day to day operational aspects of the various programs
- Act as a resource to various committees and participate in community group meetings
- Supervision of student placements and summer staff ( generally summer) involved with literacy based programs
- Full administrative duties associated with program such as preparing reports, maintaining statistics, evaluation, community meetings etc.
- Proposal and grant development to enhance programming as well as new program development
- Performs other duties as assigned by direct Supervisor to achieve program outcomes
- Constructive participation as a member of the LUSO staff team by furthering collective team goals and representing the principles and values of LUSO Community Services in all interaction with others
- Operate in accordance with policies, procedures, guidelines and protocols of LUSO Community Services,

**KEY QUALIFICATIONS**:

- B.A. (Social Sciences) OR postsecondary education in Child & Youth Care
- Minimum of 2-3 years of applied experience with children ages 0-12 as well as adults
- Must be well versed and knowledgeable in community issues and needs related to child and family literacy
