**Overview**:
The Business Development Liaison is responsible for leading and implementing ongoing initiatives and special projects in the areas of economic development, business retention, expansion and attraction, marketing and communication, promotion, and business development. The incumbent develops project parameters and leads project implementation efforts on time and on budget, with mínimal supervision, and as mandated by the strategic priorities and programs set out in the work plans of the Economic Development Office.

**Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to**:

- Coordinates and implements an ongoing Business Development Program; provides guidance to businesses; identifies and tracks trends, risks and opportunities related to the local economy; resolves issues and develops creative solutions.
- Leads day-to-day activities of the Business Development Program; works to continually improve the effectiveness of the City’s business retention, expansion and attraction efforts.
- Develops, manages and maintains an active prospect database of businesses; fields various data sources, including business lists and incoming business inquiries and referrals; manages accounts and data.
- Leads participation efforts in economic development initiatives and other City projects; works with local business executives.
- Facilitates meetings and various engagements between businesses and key City stakeholders and external partners.
- Provides information for the development and dissemination of business success stories, press releases and other communications materials.
- Develops, prepares and presents information, proposals, briefings, reports, analysis and updates at Committee, stakeholder and Council meetings; responds to inquiries; represents the department on internal and external committees as required.
- Provides guidance and direction to staff in the preparation of reports, communications, presentations and research to City Council and senior management; reviews and interprets confidential and sensitive information such as issues, contract negotiations and Closed Council material.
- Collaborates with City departments, advisory committees, government and community agencies, and the general public, ensuring that sound information, services and advice are provided, the City’s interests are professionally and effectively represented.

**Knowledge, Skills & Abilities**:

- Strong project management ability.
- Excellent communication skills in a variety of methods including oral presentation to large or small groups; professional, report, strategy and public writing; preparation of technical analysis and briefing papers.
- Excellent decision-making, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively and build relationships within the City, including internal departments and other levels of government, community members, and organizations while fostering an inclusive and respectful environment.
- Ability to break down complex issues, trace the root cause of problems and recommend corrective actions.
- Skill and ability to coordinate external communications content (news releases, online content, etc.)
- General familiarity and comfort with use of social media and cloud computing platforms.
- Ability to work within defined project/program plans, carry out procedural, technical and operating decisions to maximize productivity and efficiency of service delivery.
- Ability to independently anticipate situations of potential misalignment between the requirements of external clients and corporate policies and regulations.
- Ability to generate prospects and manage business accounts.
- Ability to reconcile accounts and budgets.
- Ability to resolve business issues by developing creative solutions within jurisdictional and policy boundaries.
- Ability to work collaboratively and build relationships with other levels of government, community members, and organizations.
- Ability to demonstrate sound judgement, diplomacy and an understanding of the organization’s strategic priorities.
- Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
- Ability to work independently, deliver results and exercise a considerable degree of independent judgement within the sensitivities of a political and regulatory environment.
