Conestoga College is looking for a full-time Counsellor to join our multidisciplinary Student Health and Wellness team. The Counsellor’s role is to provide short-term, goal-focused counselling and programming to assist students with their mental health needs so that they can achieve their academic goals. The Counsellor enhances conditions for success at college by supporting students to clearly define their personal goals, strengthen their repertoire of skills and strategies, and establish connections with relevant on-campus and community resources. As a member of the Student Health and Wellness team, the Counsellor assists with quality improvement and program initiatives intended to enhance care for our diverse population of students at Conestoga.

**Responsibilities**:

- Provide brief, goal-focused individual counselling in-person and remotely either virtually or by telephone
- Identify collaboratively with a student treatment goals that are appropriate for short-term counselling within an academic setting
- Refer students to appropriate on-campus support and community resources
- Develop and facilitate mental health programs to be delivered as a workshop or group both in-person and virtually
- Assist students with developing self-advocacy and resiliency skills in addressing their needs with members of their academic team or other related resources in the college setting
- Assess for safety risks and ensure timely, effective, and de-escalating response to risk and crisis concern
- Work collaboratively with students to create an individualized safety/wellness plans for management of suicidal/self/other harm risks as needed
- Provides counselling services to students of all ethnicities, genders, sexual/gender identities, cultural backgrounds, abilities, and beliefs
- Assist administration, faculty, and support staff, in a consultative role in identifying and dealing with how to best support a particular student
- Maintain clinical records using a shared electronic record system to document counselling appointments and related information in a timely manner
- Uphold student privacy by facilitating communication with partners external to Student Health and Wellness department by obtaining appropriate consent
- Perform clinical duties according to professional standards and requirements
- Seek clinical support from colleagues and the Clinical Manager of Counselling Services
- Participate in regularly scheduled supervision meetings with the Clinical Manager focused on professional development, projects within the team and review of clinical cases
- Participate in peer learning/consultation opportunities with other practitioners in Student Health and Wellness team in monthly peer group consultation meetings
- Actively participate in monthly team meetings and other related departmental meetings
- Contribute to the effective functioning and co-ordination of Counselling Services through flexible service delivery
- Support and contribute to initiatives within Student Health & Wellness department and the college related to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging
- Represent the department through participation in college committees and/or working groups

Qualifications:

- Master’s degree in Social Work, Counselling, Clinical Psychology, or a related discipline that requires registration in a relevant professional college
- Registered member of the professional regulatory body (e.g., Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario)
- Minimum three years of demonstrated experience providing clinical counselling for mental health-related concerns.
- Demonstrated experience working with a diverse population and understanding of the barriers faced by marginalized individuals
- Experience working with new immigrants and/or international students is an asset
- Experience with completing risk assessments and managing risk in a community setting, including safety planning
- Demonstrated experience providing brief goal-focused counselling utilizing a strengths-focused lens to promote resilience and skill
- Strong facilitation skills and experience creating psycho-educational workshops and/or groups
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
- Strong time management skills are required to complete administrative tasks and provide direct service within the scheduled workday
- Demonstrated strong communication skills both written
