**Working for the Department/Faculty**

The Department of Biological Sciences is the largest and one of the most diverse on campus in terms of the research interests of its academic staff. The department currently has 59 professors, 29 adjunct professors and 31 professors emeritus along with a graduate student population of 224 and 40 departmental support staff. Over 95% of the academic staff in the department have NSERC or CIHR funding, with the average grant monies being in excess of $200,000 per investigator.

**Position**

The Ecology Evolution and Environmental Biology Laboratory Coordinator leads the laboratory offering(s) of Introductory (1st and or 2nd year) Department of Biological Sciences courses, working closely with course lecturers (instructors), teaching assistants, and laboratory technical preparation staff.

The Lab Coordinator's primary responsibilities involve the coordination of large enrollment 1st and 2nd year labs. The Lab Coordinator is responsible for the oversight of all aspects of the labs, including interacting with students, mentoring and training graduate teaching assistants, directing the work of technical staff, working collaboratively with instructors (lectures) and collaboratively developing an effective laboratory curriculum. The laboratory coordinator is also responsible for the all safely related aspects of course(s), supervises at least one technical staff and develops and monitors an annual budget for the course(s).

The Lab Coordinator's duties include:

- mentor, train, evaluate and advise the laboratory TAs
- supervise, evaluate and advise at least one technician
- In collaboration with course instructor(s) develop and prepare curriculum, write lab manual and arrange for printing and distribution.
- In collaboration with course instructor develop and prepare lab assignments and final lab exam
- Design and maintain laboratory eClass page
- Assign TAs to lab sections
- provide lecture support and maintain student grade records for graded lab components. This includes the arrangement and organization of proctors and markers for lecture exams and the duplication and machine grading of lecture exams.
- advise students and handle student problems, absences, academic misconduct (in collaboration with TAs and instructors), etc.
- Performs the above on an ongoing basis throughout the term with mínimal supervision.

The Lab Coordinator reports to the Faculty Service Officer (FSO) who is responsible for the delivery of all the undergraduate labs in the Department of Biological Sciences. The FSO reports to the Chair of Biological Sciences Department.

**Duties**

Supervise, train and advise Graduate Teaching Assistants (TAs) (40%)
- Prepare TA teaching timetable. The number of TAs required is based on enrollment in any specific course and the number of students in each lab section. In large 1st and 2nd year courses there can be as many as 40 lab sections of 20 students per section. Scheduling of teaching time slots is based on availability and preferences of TAs and can require careful planning and negotiation in courses with many lab sections
- Communicate expectations and objectives to TAs through written material and discussion.
- Prepare and distribute instructional handouts for each week's laboratory to the TAs. These handouts ensure continuity and consistency from lab section to lab section by providing detailed instruction concerning lab theory and background, lab techniques, and detail information pertaining to upcoming assignments, quizzes, and exams.
- Conduct weekly meetings to train TAs and elaborate on the information in the handouts. These meetings give the TAs the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the lab material and equipment that the students will be studying. Meetings also give the TAs the opportunity to ask the Coordinator questions about the lab material and discuss problems in the delivery of the lab exercises and assignments.
- Provide TAs with advice on how to teach, how to best deliver the material, and how to be an effective instructor.
- Provide instruction on marking techniques to TAs; develop marking schemes and answer keys for student assignments and distribute them to the TAs.
- Monitor TAs marking of assignments to provide consistency from lab section to lab section.
- Evaluate teaching performance (formative evaluation) of TAs and discuss any problems arising during the term. Conduct a formal written performance appraisal (summative evaluation) for each TA at the end o
