**Economic Development Manager**

Sipekne’katik First Nations, one of 13 Mi’kmaq Communities in Nova Scotia, is a vibrant, growing, and close-knit community of 2982 band members with approximately 1350 members living on reserve.
Indian Brook is located in East Hants (near Shubenacadie) and is conveniently located a short distance of 68 km from Halifax and 28.8 km southwest of Truro, Nova Scotia.

**General Description**:
As a self-motivated and strategic thinker with an entrepreneurial spirit, this position will be responsible for playing a lead role in the planning and implementation of economic development opportunities for
Sipekne’katik. Under the direction of the Director Operations, the Economic Development Manager will work collaboratively with the Senior Management team and future Economic Development
Corporation.

**Responsibilities**:

- Oversee own-sourced revenue enterprises.
- Assist with the set up and administration of an Economic Development Corporation.
- Prepare business plans, feasibility studies, market studies and pro forma statements and conduct financial analysis.
- Support Sipekne’katik’s Economic & Business Development strategies.
- Utilize historic and market data, along with feasibility reports, to determine target markets and revenue generating business opportunities for the Band.
- Conduct research and seek out funding opportunities for employment and business development opportunities as well as prepare proposals and grants.
- Compile and update relevant economic data as required, whether it is Federal, provincial or economic development partners, and develops a “Community Profile” (e.g. Hammonds Plains) for distribution to potential investors.
- Maintain an inventory of businesses in the community and act as a key resource for community members interested in starting or expanding on a business opportunities.
- Prepare and maintain client files, program summaries and budget reports for submission, as required, by the Contribution agreement(s) and as directed by the Director of Operations.
- Prepare and oversee projects and program budgets as assigned.
- Develop a variety of promotional and marketing tools to attract new business for the Band and

Band Membership.
- Act as a liaison with provincial, local and regional governments to encourage regional cooperation and effective economic development efforts for the band.
- Supervise and mentor other staff as assigned.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director of Operations such as research projects, presentations, attending meetings, site visits and preparing written documentation.

**Qualifications**:

- Post secondary education in a related field along with 2 years of related experience in the business industry. An equivalent combination of experience and education will be considered.
- Strong knowledge of research and analytics relating to current and future economic development projects.
- Must be a strategic and proactive thinker with strong entrepreneurial and networking skills.
- Ability to become familiar with the business needs of a first nations community.
- Strong skills in marketing, public speaking and financial/project management.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills combined with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Proficient using Microsoft Office Suite and social media platforms.
- Must hold a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel.
- Open to, and interested in, obtaining required skills and competencies for the position.
- Must be flexible in terms of hours of work in order to deal with meetings and events that occur outside normal office hours.
- Must have a satisfactory criminal records check. Having a criminal record is not necessarily a determinate factor.
