As a Building Safety Codes Officer II, you will be responsible for administering provincial Safety Code authority duties, including auditing for compliance with relevant codes and other legislation such as the Safety Codes Act, the Alberta Building Code, and Safety Codes Permit Bylaw 15894, as applicable to residential, Part 9, Part 3 structures.

You will have direct interactions with a variety of internal and external stakeholders by providing expert technical information and granting permits and/or providing inspections. Work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures, and complex and unusual problems are referred to a senior Safety Codes Officer.

With a focus on the City of Edmonton’s Cultural Commitments to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:

- Notify applicants of findings by appropriate business correspondence and reports
- Create and issue building permits, which includes the authority to withhold, suspend, revoke and extend permits through existing processes
- Grant detailed permits for construction to proceed at different stages as per submitted and approved plans
- Input relevant data, reports, correspondence and permits into POSSE and other data management systems
- Sign permits and ensure payment of fees prior to permit issuance
- Prepare legal agreements for cranes and hoardings (i.e., crane swing path and overhead work)
- Create reports or other correspondence detailing any questions or deficiencies found on site as well as actions taken and recommendations provided
- Coordinate approvals for other departments
- Provide interpretations, information, and explanations relating to the Building Code, bylaws or other regulations to various stakeholders, including contractors, designers, developers, and citizens, as applicable
- Build relationships with builders, applicants, contractors, and other external stakeholders to enhance City reputation and service delivery
- Inspect projects for the highest standards of performance maintained and compliance with applicable City of Edmonton Occupational Health and Safety Standards and Guidelines (these documents outline OHS accountability at all levels of the organization, relative to legislative requirements)
- Attend and participate in safety meetings and training, and advise of any health and safety concerns
- Attend environmental protection training and ensure environmental protection issues are implemented
- Ensure that all assigned tasks are performed in an environmentally safe manner
- Perform other related duties as required

**Qualifications**:

- Grade 12 and one of the following combinations of education and experience:

- Journeyman Carpenter, Plumber, Electrician, Sheet Metal Worker or Bricklayer Certification recognized in Alberta with a minimum of five years of journeyman experience in the construction of commercial and residential buildings, or;
- A two-year technology diploma in a related field or equivalent recognized in Canada and seven years of relevant experience in the building construction industry, or;
- Engineering or Architecture degree recognized in Canada and five (5) years of relevant experience in the building construction industry

Note: relevant experience is work related to the design, construction, commissioning, repair or renovation of buildings and structures regulated by the Alberta Building Code, or the supervision of work or projects regulated by the Alberta Building Code and that may include a combination of onsite and office work but shall, in all cases, include onsite involvement in the construction process.
- Registered Building Safety Codes Officer in the Province of Alberta having completed “Residential”, “Part 9” and “Part 3” or equivalent (Group A Level 3)
- Experience in the construction of buildings, including best practices and understanding of project scheduling
- Strong knowledge of standard methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment employed in the building construction trades with experience involving Residential, Part 9 and Part 3 projects
- Ability to recognize construction that does not meet the intent of the Alberta Building Code or hazardous conditions pertaining to building construction
- Determine the structural stability of buildings and structures through review of plans or on-site inspections
- Ability to analyze and interpret simple plans or designs prepared by applicants, architects, and engineers
- Customer service focused with ability to work through a variety of customer needs with professionalism
- Ability to explain technical concepts and interpretations in simple terms to citizens and homeowners
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects and effectively organize tasks, as well as the flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and circumstances
- Ability to work independently and contribute positively as part of a team
