**Location** - This role is in person at the Roy Berg Kinsella Research Ranch in Kinsella, Alberta.

**Department summary**

The Faculty of ALES is made up of 500+ faculty and staff, 1500+ undergraduates and 600+ graduate students. ALES is focused on teaching, research & community service in its departments and schools: Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science; Renewable Resources; Human Ecology; Resource Economics and Environmental Sociology. We have strong academic undergraduate and graduate programs, a large research infrastructure which includes 25,000 acres of farm & ranch land in key ecologies across Alberta, and high-impact research in collaboration with our partners.

**Position summary**

Based at the Roy Berg Kinsella Research Ranch in Kinsella, Alberta, this position takes a primary role in equipment operation in support of ranch activity (feeding, forage production, field work when applicable, fencing, pen cleaning and manure management). Ancillary to this is a lead role in equipment maintenance and associated record keeping of maintenance on vehicles and machinery. The Research Technician will have a supporting role in animal husbandry activity (calving, weaning, vaccination, treatments, sorting, moving cattle, winter feeding and feedlot/Growsafe feeding), and take an active role in research-specific procedures (e.g. blood sampling).

The Research Technician will assist the Unit Supervisor and Research Stations Manager with the occupational health and safety program including developing and revising hazard assessments, standard operating procedures, scheduling of required training and record keeping/safety program documentation to comply with provincial OHS legislation. They will assist the Unit Supervisor and Director of Animal Care with review and revision of animal care SOPs.

**Duties**
- Husbandry of research herds including calving, vaccination, treatments, pasture moves, weaning, and research tasks.
- Mix and deliver feed to cattle both on winter pasture and in feedlots.
- Equipment and facility maintenance.
- Assist senior staff with operation and monitoring of GrowSafe Feed Monitoring System
- Work with unit supervisor, researchers, and graduate students with research project logistics and delivery.
- Support the Unit Supervisor and Research Stations Manager in implementation and documentation in compliance with OHS legislation.
- Development, revision, and review (with Unit Supervisor and Director of Animal Care) of all animal care SOPs

**Qualifications**
- 2-year diploma in a related field (Beef Production, Range Ecology, Renewable Resource Management)
- Training or tickets in construction trades, fabrication trades, or mechanical trades an asset.
