The Centre for Oil Sands Sustainability is looking to hire a research associate to join the team. The Centre for Oil Sands Sustainability is located in NAIT’s state-of-the art research laboratory in the Productivity and Innovation Centre. COSS is staffed by an expert team of applied scientists, engineers and technicians. We bridge the gap between existing oil sands environmental research and real-world solutions, taking innovative ideas from concept to commercialization. We work with business and industry to develop technologies that improve the economic and environmental performance of the oil sands industry.

The primary responsibilities of this position will be to initiate, manage and report on projects relating to oil sands tailings. This position will report to the Ledcor Applied Research Chair in Oil Sands Sustainability.

**Key Responsibilities**:

- Design and plan experiments to investigate and analyze novel industrial technologies.
- Use project management tools to ensure projects are running on budget, on time.
- Perform literature searches on new technologies.
- Interact and collaborate with industrial/academic partners to validate and develop new techniques, products or practices.
- Write technical reports and research papers.
- Present ongoing work and findings at conferences, seminars and technical meetings with industrial partners.
- Acquire, tabulate and perform calculations on data using Excel, Statistica, Matlab, Origin, R.
- Interpret laboratory data using relevant models (i.e. GeoFlow, FSConsol, UnSatconsol etc)
- Providing support for ongoing projects including method development for laboratory procedures
- Perform hazard assessments, create standard operating procedures, safe work practices

**Skills & Abilities**:

- Thorough knowledge of complex related applied research routines and procedures
- Thorough knowledge of related applied research techniques and methods
- Significant knowledge of statistical analysis methods
- Knowledge of related computer software

**Qualifications**:

- Minimum MSc in Geo environmental or Geotechnical Engineering or equivalent degree required with related research experience. Preference is for a PhD.
- 2 years related experience
- Demonstrated ability to problem solve and design research programs.
- Experience with oil/water/clay interfaces, consolidation modeling, freeze-thaw, and quick clays is an asset.
- Class 5 driver’s license and willingness to travel is an asset.
- Equivalencies may be considered

**Remuneration**: $2,694.13 - $3,613.98 bi-weekly, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification - Research Associate l).
- This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement._
