**Position**

The Laboratory Technician position is part of Dr. Georg Schmölzer’s research team and will work on a variety of studies under supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI) and the Research Assistants/Associates (RAs). The Laboratory Technician is responsible for assisting and supporting the PI and the RAs in the overall operation of the studies. Duties include, but are not limited to: conducting experiments in animal models, recording data, collect/label/analyze samples, clean and maintain experimental area/equipment, and assist RAs with research activities. The Laboratory Technician must be able to monitor the accuracy and completeness of data and information collected. This position works closely with the RAs in maintaining laboratory standards and assists in updating standard operating protocols as necessary.

**Duties**
- Carry out activities of conducting experiments in animal models (including pigs and rabbits).
- Handle animals, anesthetizing animals, conducting surgical procedures (including catheterization of femoral arteries and veins, intubation, and attaching flow probes).
- Monitor animals (including administering ongoing anesthetics and analgesics, maintaining body temperature, ensuring adequate oxygenation, and recording observations on data sheets throughout experiment).
- Euthanize animals at end of experiment, performing autopsy and collecting all necessary tissue samples (including collecting samples in fixative, snap-freezing tissue samples in liquid nitrogen, and labeling all sampled),
- Clean up at end of experimental day (including disposal of biological waste, disposal of sharps, cleaning and sterilizing all surgical instruments, and cleaning all surfaces).
- Carry out activities of conducting data collection.
- Ensure all relevant data is collected throughout and at the end of the experiment.
- Keep the research folders organized with all the completed data sheets.
- Prepare, compile, and report any data as requested by the PI and/or RAs.
- Carry out activities of maintaining the research laboratory.
- Conduct daily, weekly, monthly, and annual cleaning requirements, as listed in the standard operating protocols.
- Prepare and maintain a variety of specialized reagents and solutions for use in experiments.
- Notify the RAs of laboratory supply items that require ordering.
- Notify the PI and/or RAs if laboratory equipment requires maintenance, service, or replacement.
- Ensure all supplies and equipment needed for the animal experiments are in working order, sterilized, and prepared for the day of experiment.
- Ensure all necessary Laboratory Technician safety training courses and animal ethics and handling courses are completed and up-to-date, and providing certificates of completion to the PI and/or RAs.
- Carry out activities of providing updates to PI and/or RAs on study as necessary.
- Liaise with the PI and/or RAs to give/receive information.
- Participate in meetings to discuss new and established projects and publications.

**Qualifications**
- Technical Diploma in Animal Health.
- 2+ years' experience in a research laboratory environment.
- Experience in translational experiments in respiratory and cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology would be an asset.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
- Experience with handling and care of large laboratory animals (piglets and rabbits), biological specimens, and laboratory materials.
