**Community Support Aide - Contract Position**

**About the Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society.**
The Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society is a not-for-profit society, established in 1989. Our members believe that individuals with Down syndrome are capable of full participation in society and should be given the opportunity to develop their potential.

To make this mission come to life, the Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society aims to:

- Provide information, support, services, and resources to individuals with Down Syndrome in

BC and their families.
- Provide information about Down Syndrome and resources to people and organizations who support individuals with Down Syndrome and their families.
- Advocate those governments and appropriate agency to provide the special resources often needed by individuals with Down Syndrome and their families.
- Lobby for appropriate educational, vocational, and social opportunities.
- Support families and increase public awareness.
- Network with other organizations and individuals.

**PURPOSE OF ROLE**
- The goal of a Community Support Aide is to provide a safe environment that supports individuals to gain a greater independence and quality of life through participation in community based social, recreational & vocational opportunities.
- Community Support Aides will assist in the enrichment of the community programs and services. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to plan & lead recreational programming while assisting with activities of daily living. Due to Covid-19, our program services have adapted to meet client & family needs through in-person, virtual, and community outreach.

**ACCOUNTABILITIES**
- To follow all Covid guidelines set out by Health Canada and community venues.
- To follow all emergency procedures provided by Parent/Caregivers and will keep contact information on hand.
- To submit your signed timesheet to LMDSS
- Forming supportive relationships with diverse learners, families, and caregivers
- Planning fun learning activities in the community
- Working together with social workers, behaviour consultants and other professionals as part of an integrated team.
- Must be at least 19 years of age.
- Self-motivated while working mostly independently.
- Able to communicate as part of a team (parents, LMDSS (Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society) and community).
- Able to provide oral and written reports upon request.
- Must be reliable and dependable with a flexible schedule as needed by the families.

**SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS**
**Education**:

- Two years of post-secondary education or training in child & youth care or a related fields prefer (Community Support Worker, Educational Assistances, Special Education Teachers,

Social Services, Kinesiology, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, and Nursing Education, Behavioural Interventionist (BI).
- Computer Literacy.
- Excellent English oral and written communication skills.

**Experience**:

- Experience working with individuals with development disabilities, and their families in a diverse environment. For example, life skills, recreation and leisure.
- Ability to support a safe environment while in the community.
- Experience with the principles of positive behaviour management and conflict resolution
- Demonstrated problem solving and decision-making skills with diverse behaviours.
- Able to support individuals living on their own.
- Focus on building relationships with the individual, their families and other community support.
- Focus on building connections with other people to gain friendships and circles of support.
- Able to source local community resources for fun learning activities.

**Requirements**:

- Must be at least 19 years of age.
- Self-motivated while working mostly independently.
