At McMaster, our research strength is one of our most prized assets. A defining and differentiating characteristic of McMaster is its nuclear profile. With nuclear education and research activities spanning several faculties and a suite of five nuclear facilities, with the largest research reactor in Canada and one of the largest university based reactors in the world at its heart, McMaster has an unparalleled reputation and capabilities in this area. Major accomplishments in medical isotope production, radiopharmaceutical research and the creation of spinout companies from the hosted Centre for Probe Development and Commercialization, and major CFI awards to create a new Canadian Neutron Beam Lab in the McMaster Nuclear Reactor are recent examples of McMaster’s impact in the nuclear profile. McMaster is a significant player on the national stage for Canada’s nuclear future and is increasingly in a position of leadership with respect to the Canadian academic sector’s role in achieving Net Zero 2050 and strengthening our Nuclear research profile has been identified as a strategic priority by the President and Vice-President’s in recent years. A critical success factor to this effort is to increase the research user base and scientific impact of the facilities while building outreach and integration to the University’s academic programs. They will lead an effort to significantly increase our outreach program, serving our local, national and Indigenous communities with information to support decision making on McMaster and other nuclear activities.
