The Payroll Supervisor leads the payroll team and is accountable for the timely, accurate and efficient processing of Seaspan’s full cycle bi-weekly hourly or salaried payrolls. Through direct supervision of unionized Payroll Clerks or non-unionized Payroll Specialists (as applicable) this role ensures that all hourly & salaried pay, deductions and remittances are calculated, processed, reconciled and reported properly according to established policies, procedures and collective agreement guidelines. This role also provides backup for the Payroll Manager during vacation and assists in payroll-related projects as required.

The Payroll Lead Supervisor reports directly to the Payroll Manager. There are two Payroll Supervisors; one accountable for the hourly payroll team and the other accountable for salaried payroll team.

**What you'll do**
- Payroll Administration: Supervises the payroll team in its processing and financial reconciliation of complex payroll, ensuring accurate and timely processing of the hourly or salaried payrolls and one-off payments.
- Financial Management and Controls: Contributes to the development and delivery of financial policies, guidelines, and protocols to ensure the company complies with regulations and good financial practice
- Works within established systems to deliver prescribed outcomes for a designated area of financial control.
- Business Intelligence: Resolve queries from internal or external customers or suppliers by providing information on complex processes and the related policies, referring to others where necessary for interpretation of policy.
- Relationship Management: Assists with stakeholder (internal & external) engagement by arranging actions, meetings, events, and supporting materials to promote stakeholder understanding and commitment.
- Internal stakeholders may include all Seaspan employees, as well as Marine Personnel, Shipyard Management Team, Corporate Human Resources, Finance & Accounting department, BTS and Washington Group of Companies IT team. Interactions with these internal contacts ensure that the payroll is processed in a timely and accurate manner and any internal payroll related issues are resolved.
- External contacts may include union representatives, Canada Revenue Agency, WorkSafe BC, EI, group benefits companies and pension plans contacts. This role ensures any payments or remittances to these organizations are processed in a timely and accurate manner and that the Company’s legal and contractual obligations are fulfilled.
- Compliance: Stays up-to date on collective agreement requirements and interpret this to day-to-day practices where necessary. Interpret process updates where necessary.
- Interprets legal regulation requirements to day-to-day operation practices and communicate this to direct reports. Interpret process updates where necessary.
- Information Systems: Supports the implementation of financial systems process changes and enhancements; ensure all changes are effectively implemented.
- Identifies the needs for system performance to process payroll information accurately and efficiently, reporting these needs to Manager. Leads the execution in coordinating with Business Analysts to ensure payroll needs from the system are met.
- Leadership: Explains the action plan to support team members in their understanding of what needs to be done, and how this relates to the broader business plan and the organization's strategy, mission and vision; motivate people to achieve local business goals.
- Provides coaching to team members to develop their skills.

**What you'll bring**
- Post secondary degree with advanced payroll and accounting courses
- A minimum of five (5) years experience in handling complex, multi company payrolls
- 1-3 years experience in a leadership/ supervisory role
- Completion of Canada Payroll Association Payroll Compliance Practitioner certificate
- Completion of or enrolment in Canada Payroll Association Certified Payroll Manager certificate
- Knowledge and experience in union contract interpretation is required
- Strong payroll functional and technical knowledge.
- Advanced knowledge of E1 payroll module including new company and system set up procedures
- Advanced knowledge in Microsoft Excel
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to lead a team of payroll clerks to meet time sensitive deadlines
- Attention to detail and a strong ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
- Customer service focused
- Ability to work both collaboratively and independently
