Overview:
As a key member of the Strategic Initiatives and Communications team, and in collaboration with Environment stakeholders and cross-campus colleagues, the Manager, Environment Indigenous Initiatives will work closely with the Director, Strategic Initiatives and Communications to develop and deliver several key priorities including:

- Multi-year strategy for the Faculty of Environment-specific response to the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action - including building reciprocal, respectful, long term, and continuous relationships with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities.
- In line with the University’s Strategic Plan, and the Office of Indigenous Relations’ Strategic Plan, strives to address the underrepresentation of Indigenous people and to increase specialized support at the Faculty-level

The University of Waterloo’s Strategic Plan 2020-2025 states, “We particularly recognize Indigenous students, faculty, staff and alumni. We are committed to learning about the rich history and culture of Indigenous people of this land and an institutional response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls for action.” In line with the University’s Strategic Plan and the Indigenization Strategy, the Associate Director strives to address the underrepresentation of Indigenous people and to increase specialized support for Indigenous members of the Waterloo community.

We ask each interested applicant to include a statement indicating if they identify as First Nations, Métis or Inuit in their cover letter. Supporting documentation for membership/citizenship in an Indigenous community will be required and possibly additional information about community connection, family, and relationship to working with Indigenous communities/knowledges may be required, if an applicant is invited for an interview.

**Term: 2 years**

**Responsibilities**:
Strategic Planning and Advising
- Provide professional planning and project management leadership for the development of an Indigenous strategy and implementation plans at the Faculty-level which is complementary to and supportive of the University’s and Faculty’s strategic visions and plans, in particular, the Indigenous Strategic Plan.
- Lead the creation of planning documents, including drafting documents, facilitating discussions with key internal and external stakeholders to assess needs and goals; conducting in-depth research and analysis across the University, sector and other relevant contexts; mapping timelines and approval pathways; and developing communications, consultation and change management plans.
- Lead implementation, including by:

- monitoring project progress and alerting stakeholders of upcoming deadlines and milestones
- planning and facilitating meetings, retreats, workshops, focus groups, and other discussions
- preparing presentations, reports, communications materials and other documentation, and conducting related research and analysis
- Provide context, advice and guidance to leadership related to Indigenous matters.

Fostering Positive Relationships
- Develop and enhance working partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to advance the implementation of the Indigenous strategy and plans.
- Working with Faculty leadership, develop plans to foster an inclusive environment in Environment and positive relationships with Indigenous communities.
- Work with the Office of Indigenous Relations (OIR) and the Waterloo Indigenous Student Centre (WISC) to develop and provide supports for Environment Indigenous students.

Building Awareness and Presence
- Working with the Director, Strategic Initiatives and Communications, Communications Manager and other stakeholders, develop a communications strategy, content, and resources to grow awareness of and report on progress with respect to Environment Indigenous initiatives.
- Work with the Associate Deans, Registrar’s Office, and colleagues responsible for undergraduate and graduate marketing and recruitment to develop recruitment strategies and materials for prospective Indigenous students.

Supporting Indigenous Curriculum and Research
- Work with Associate Deans, faculty members, and CTE to develop and communicate guidance for Indigenous content in curriculum.
- Work with Associate Dean, Research to connect Indigenous researchers to supports and opportunities available through the Office of Research.
- Work with Associate Dean, Research and Office of Research to raise awareness of policies, standards, best practices, guidelines, rules, and other advice for researchers working with Indigenous communities.

Qualifications:

- University degree in related field (Indigenous studies, geography, environment, communications, public relations).
- Additional training or credentials related to strategic planning, project management or communications, strongly preferred.
- Lived experience through Indigenous ancestry and strong ties to First Nations, Métis or Inuit commun
