**Your opportunity**:
The Department of Medicine (DOM) is one of the largest in North America, with 830 full-time faculty members, 1,000 postgraduate trainees, and 20 specialty and sub-specialty divisions located across six fully-affiliated hospitals, four community-affiliated hospitals and more than a dozen additional clinical practice sites. We are a powerhouse of medical research, with more than $162-million in annual research funding. This research generates new knowledge with the goal of meaningfully impacting internal medicine training and the care and health outcomes of patients and their families.

As Communications Officer, you will translate our vision and mission into a robust communications strategy that will highlight and profile the department’s academic and research excellence. In addition to maintaining a portfolio of communication channels, you will identify story opportunities and follow up with research, interviews and images to create newsletters, news stories and feature articles. Your exceptional writing skills, and your ability to shape compelling content will enable us to optimize our digital footprint.

**Your responsibilities will include**:

- Researching and recommending story ideas that advance department priorities and initiatives
- Conducting interviews with leaders, faculty, staff and students for external publication
- Writing and editing copy and content to advance communications objectives, including news and feature stories, newsletters, websites and fundraising/donor relations materials
- Writing key messages and speeches for staff and faculty
- Liaising with the University's central communication office to pitch stories and liaising with department staff to support effective content/story development
- Implementing a digital media plan and managing social media channels

**Essential Qualifications**:

- Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience
- Minimum four years of relevant communications experience in a university, teaching hospital or comparable environment
- Experience implementing communications strategies and plans
- Proven experience writing concisely and to deadline; conducting interviews, translating scientific material, writing news and feature stories andspeeches
- In-depth knowledge and significant experience managing social media channels, including building active engagement, maintaining a consistent voice and expanding reach
- Demonstrated experience tracking and reporting on meaningful metrics
- Experience making recommendations for improvements based on insights, best practices and objectives
- Experience successfully coordinating multiple projects concurrently
- Experience conceptualizing and coordinating events
- Proven design capabilities, including experience with web and graphic design software and working collaboratively with external vendors
- Advanced proficiency with MS Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, social media, content management systems and newsletter platforms
- Superb communications skills, including the ability to concisely summarize information and write for various formats and channels
- Ability to identify good story opportunities; excellent research, interviewing, writing, editing, and print design/layout skills are essential
- Must be creative, resourceful and solutions-oriented
- A self-starter possessing the ability to work independently in a high-profile, time-sensitive environment and deal with competing priorities
- Must be an enthusiastic and energetic team player who works collaboratively and diplomatically in a complex multi-stakeholder environment
- Willingness to develop and share technological expertise
