**Location**: Remote, hybrid or local (MNC Office, #600-180 Elgin Street, Ottawa, ON)

**Position Status**: Contract (Temporary)

**Term**: May 13 to September 3, 2024 (Summer position); 35 hours per week

**Salary**: $25/hour

**The Organization**:
The Métis Nation is a distinct Indigenous people recognized under Section 35 of the Canadian Constitution Act, 1982. The Métis National Council (MNC) and its Governing Members advocate for the Métis Nation. The primary mandate of the MNC is to work with federal and other key stakeholders to resolve systemic issues and concerns of the Métis Nation such as the fiscal relationship with the federal government; economic development; health; childcare and family services; education; environment, Métis veterans, and language promotion and protection. The MNC represents the Métis Nation both domestically and abroad and seeks to reinforce the Métis Nation’s right to self-government in Canada.

**The Position**:
The Métis National Council (MNC) is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our Environment, Climate Change and Emergency Management department this summer as an intern. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience working on a variety of important issues related to conservation and biodiversity, while learning about topics like climate change mitigation and emergency management. The Environment Intern will work at the Métis National Council throughout the Summer of 2024 with tasks like administrative support, logistics coordination and research assistance.

**Key Responsibilities**:
∞ Support the Environment, Climate Change and Emergency Management department with administrative tasks like meeting notes for the National Environment Technical Meetings, developing agendas and assisting with the coordination of logistics.

∞ Assist with the development of program materials and a promotional display for opportunities like the Back to Batoche Days festival where the Environment team will share program information with festival attendees.

∞ Support the Environment team with research on policy best practices for environmental issues. Distill international and national policy reports to share top line messages and learnings that can improve the Environment team’s approach to environmental priority areas identified by MNC’s Governing Members.

∞ Learn about Métis leadership on conservation, climate change and emergency management and its role in national and international policy.

∞ Work with Governing Member technicians and the National Youth Council where appropriate.

**Qualifications**:
∞ Enrolled in a post-secondary program in environmental science, natural resource management, Indigenous studies, or a related field (or recent graduate).

∞ Ability to work collaboratively with team members

∞ Interest in Métis culture and environmental issues

∞ Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.

**Knowledge and Skills**:
∞ Understanding of Métis culture, history, and the unique challenges faced by Métis communities.

∞ High level of tact, diplomacy, discretion

∞ Excellent judgement and creativity

∞ Organizational, multi-tasking and time-management skills

∞ Resilience and adaptability

**Additional Requirements**:
∞ Complete a clean Criminal Record Check with the Vulnerable Sector.

∞ Willingness to travel domestically or internationally, at times with short notice.
