Simulation Educator

The Simulation Program at Unity Health Toronto encompasses all three sites of our organization and allows students, health disciplines and nursing professionals, researchers, administrators and physicians to practice skills in a safe, realistic learning environment using high fidelity Human Patient Simulators, Virtual Reality and task trainers. Health care simulation involves a range of activities that share a similar purpose: to improve patient safety and quality of care, provide interprofessional education opportunities, and increase the effectiveness and efficiency of health care services.
Stakeholders include Unity Health Toronto staff, physicians, students from educational affiliates (The University of Toronto, The Michener Institute of Education at UHN etc.) and external clients.
The Simulation Educator acts as an leader, educator, facilitator, faculty developer, consultant, and role model supporting simulation based activities for individuals and interprofessional groups/teams across all three sites of the organization to optimize patient safety and quality, evidence based care.
**Duties and Responsibilities**:
- Assesses the needs (perceived or determined) of staff, students, and physicians in conjunction with knowledge of organizational policy and strategy (corporate strategic plan, simulation program mission statement, education portfolio strategic plan), clinical practice areas, and partnerships to identify opportunities for innovative integration of simulation activities.
- Identifies and/or responds to changes in organizational practice/policies, education, and simulation best practices to develop or revise the simulation education, plans or activities to support those changes.
- Facilitates the delivery of simulation that utilizes principles of adult education, evidence-based practice, and includes a range of learning methodologies including in situ and/or tabletop simulation.
- Designs, delivers and evaluates faculty development simulation courses (i.e. simulation instructor, basics of simulation, and debriefing courses) and internal/external revenue generating courses integrating principles of adult learning and instructional design.
- Uses deep understanding of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) accreditation requirements, current simulation education research, clinical and technical expertise, educational theories and models, and curriculum development and evaluation to provide quality simulation support to Faculty and staff.
- Facilitates the creation of a psychologically safe, learner-centered environment within the simulation program, supporting, coaching and mentoring other team members, staff, Faculty, and students.
- Attends and/or presents at simulation conferences, workshops and other simulation educational activities to remain current and informed about simulation education and research, and interprofessional simulation education including joining related associations.
- Identifies opportunities for staff/faculty development, systems, and process advancement (quality improvement). These opportunities are identified through needs assessments, safety and quality reports, and in collaboration with the Simulation Program leadership and Steering Committee Members.
- Actively leads the advancement and growth of interprofessional simulation based education, leading to optimization of high performing teams that support patient safety and quality care.
- Collaborates with Faculty and other users to design clinical scenarios for implementation, aligning the needs of the learners, session objectives, and abilities (equipment, staff, simulation expertise) of the specific site.
- Lead the auditing process in accordance with the Instructor and faculty Audit Evaluation (as per the RCPSC).
- Attends and represents the Simulation Program in appropriate internal meetings/committees of Unity Health Toronto and any external groups as required.
**Qualifications**:
- Member of a regulated Health Professional (e.g. College of Physiotherapists of Ontario, or College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario or College of Nurses of Ontario) required
- ACLS and BLS Heart and Stroke Instructor required
- Simulation Instructor Training (Harvard Centre for Medical Simulation) or equivalent preferred
- DASH Certified (Harvard Centre for Medical Simulation) preferred
- Experience with identification of learning needs and creation of objectives using Adult Learning Theory
- Experience with simulation scenario design, pre-briefing and debriefing
- Experience with simulation specific software preferred
- Ability to function independently and collaboratively within a team
- Demonstrate strong leadership qualities, effective communication, interpersonal and organization skills
- Experience with technology, including simulation-specific equipment
