Position Description

The Simulation Specialist is a key partner in creating a culture of excellence for all educational activities supported by the Simulation Program and Learning Institute. The Simulation Specialist has a technical focus and will provide operational support for simulations, including preparation, maintenance and repair of computerized manikins (software and hardware), task trainers, and related multimedia. In accordance with sound educational practices, the Simulation Specialist will be involved in needs assessment, evaluation and data collection. The Simulation Specialist must have comprehensive knowledge of the technology, simulators, and audiovisual systems within the Simulation Program.

The Simulation Program is an exciting and growing program having recently moved into a state-of-the-art Simulation Centre in November 2023.

Here's What You'll Get to Do

Operations

  • Responsible for set-up, transition, and break down for simulation activities (including equipment and multimedia needs).
  • Serves as simulator operator during simulation activities.
  • Collaborates with Simulation Specialist and Simulation Educators in all aspects of planning, preparation, programming, and testing for simulation activities.
  • Designs and prints task trainers using various software (tinkerCAD, Solidworks) and 3D printer
  • Ensures exceptional service to all education and clinical partners
  • Maintains the Simulation Centre as a clean, safe and operational facility and optimal learning environment.
  • Trouble-shoots high fidelity and procedural skills equipment.
  • Install software and hardware upgrades and maintain functionality of manikin components as directed by manufacturer support.
  • Assist with ensuring the Simulation Centre is in compliance with Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Accreditation standards.
  • Leads or assists with research or quality improvement studies.

Equipment Maintenance

  • Conducts routine equipment maintenance and inventory updates.
  • Identifies and communicates need for replacement equipment.
  • Maintains records of equipment repair and maintenance.

Data Collection and Analysis

  • Maintains databases related to usage of space, equipment, scenarios, and evaluations. Generates reports as required from databases.
  • Reviews evaluation data regularly and makes recommendations regarding program enhancements based on evaluation data received. Provides reports to Simulation Instructors following every simulation session.
  • Reviews equipment usage data regularly to forecast maintenance requirements and develop capital plans.

Education

  • Teaches and orients on the effective and safe use of simulation equipment (high fidelity and procedural).
  • In collaboration with the Simulation Educators, develops training sessions on the operational aspects of running effective simulations
  • Supports scholarly activity within the program - development of educational presentations, posters and conference workshops by helping extract relevant data from various databases and video recordings, sharing technical knowledge and operational expertise.
  • Supports Simulation Program advertising and information dissemination

Quality Improvement

  • Identifies opportunities for improvement, innovation, and development of initiatives for the operations of the Simulation Program. This may involve participating in team huddles (CIP), daily scrum, etc.
  • Presents recommendations for procedural and work-flow efficiencies in the Simulation Program to Simulation Steering Committee or Manager Education.

Leadership

  • Participates on equipment selection committees/task forces.
  • Assists with technical evaluation of proposed new equipment.
  • Participates in the installation phase of new equipment

Professional Development

  • Maintains professional skills and refines expertise through appropriate educational/developmental activities and professional affiliations.
  • Remains current with national and international advances in simulation.
  • Maintains proficiency in existing and emerging technologies

Essential requirements

  • Undergraduate degree or diploma, preferably in a technical, IT, educational or healthcare related field
  • Registered with the appropriate professional regulating body (if applicable)
  • Strong computer skills including PowerPoint, Word, Excel.
  • Ability to function independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Excellent oral and written communication,
  • Excellent technical skills required to facilitate use of simulation equipment and troubleshoot malfunctions.
  • Excellent skills working with computer software and comfort with information technology.
  • Highly organized
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) and experience advancing EDI objectives
