Job Purpose

Reporting to the Director of Food and Facility Operations, the Fresh Approaches Program Coordinator supports all initiatives related to the Fresh Approaches program as well as the operation of the Fresh Approaches Food Centre on site at The Food Bank.

The short-term responsibilities of this role may vary, as priorities of The Food Bank change.

Responsibilities and Duties

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES AND EXAMPLES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO_:_

1_._ Leading the Fresh Approaches Food Centre operations:

- Providing guidance, support and direction to staff and volunteer teams on the handling and processing of food product.
- Coordinating and maintaining relationships with 3rd party commercial kitchens (where necessary) to facilitate processing beyond The Food Bank’s capacity (i.e., soups, stews, sauces).
- Liaising with the Warehouse Operations Manager and Warehouse Associates to determine frozen product challenges (i.e., product breakdown, packaging, or repackaging options).
- Developing schedules (weekly/monthly) for food processing room utilization including all engagement, special events, and daily activity.
- Identifying equipment needs for the Food Centre, including researching product options and working with vendors to procure equipment.

2. Coordinating programs and services related to the Fresh Approaches Food Centre:

- Providing support to Marketing & Communications plans to effectively brand and communicate the use and impact of the Fresh Approaches Program (i.e., stories, photos, testimonials).
- Working with the Food Assistance Network of programs and services - creating resources, food packages and innovative programs to meet the food needs of our community.
- Creating new programs to increase food literacy within our partner agencies and their participants.
- Creating resources to support partner agencies in complying with food safety guidelines.
- Developing recipe cards and other support materials to encourage members of the community to cook with fresh products.
- Providing support to innovative program execution in identified Waterloo Region neighbourhoods (including on-site support, program development, and 3rd party team support).

3. Managing all Fresh Approaches Program volunteers:

- Working with teams of volunteers (corporate, youth, school age) to process, package, label and store food for future distribution.
- Partnering with the Volunteer Program Officer to establish training guidelines for all perishable program and food processing volunteers.
- Working with the Volunteer Program Officer on the forecasting and recruitment process for new volunteers.
- Training program volunteers on food handling processes and specific tasks related to the processing of food, ensuring that all Health & Safety guidelines are being met.
- Managing day-to-day support of all program volunteers.
- Conducting volunteer performance reviews and regular check-ins.

4. Performing other duties as required.

Location and Hours
- The Food Bank of Waterloo Region is located at 50 Alpine Court in Kitchener, Ontario.
- The role is required to be onsite for the work week.
- We are open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.
- The working hours of this role are dependent on the needs of the Fresh Approaches Program at The Food Bank. The Fresh Approaches Program Coordinator will work a variety of shifts each week including days, evenings and weekends as dictated by the program’s needs.

Reporting Structure and Working Relationships
- The Fresh Approaches Program Coordinator reports to the Director of Food and Facility Operations.
- This role is an integral part of our Operations and Fresh Approaches Program teams.
- A significant amount of time in this role is spent working with volunteers.
- The role often collaborates with other teams at The Food Bank to meet objectives and commitments.

**Qualifications**:
EXPERIENCE AND ASSETS
- 3-5 years’ food service experience.
- 5+ years of management or supervisory experience.
- Strong knowledge of food safety and food facility operations (including health and safety, government regulations, and local health codes).
- Knowledge of basic sanitation requirements and food handling safety standards.
- Experience with adult education principles an asset.
- Valid Standard First Aid - CPR A - AED certification.

EDUCATION
- Formal training in a food-related field (i.e., culinary management, nutrition, etc.).
- Working towards certification as a Registered Dietician.
