**Major Purpose**
The Manager, Advocacy supervises a team of government relations experts, takes responsibility for the coordination and execution of creative political outreach and advocacy strategies, and leads daily issues management across FCM’s priority files. The Manager is to be also responsible for leading the detailed planning process for significant FCM political events including Advocacy Days, meetings of the Big City Mayors Caucus (BCMC), FCM’s Annual Conference, and other political engagement milestones.
The Manager collaborates with the Director, Advocacy and Engagement and team to consistently identify and leverage opportunities to build support for municipal priorities among Parliamentarians and their staff, all federal political parties, and fellow government relations professionals in FCM’s stakeholder network. Building and maintaining a network of relationships to mobilize across the federal political landscape and within the government relations community of stakeholder organizations will be essential.

The Officer, will maintain the highest level of confidentiality, professionalism and exercise good judgment including the ability to escalate to management when help is required and being able to meet deadlines as set out by their direct manager within a fast-paced corporate environment.
**Key Responsibilities**
- Coordinate daily issues management across FCM’s priority policy and advocacy files.
- Develop and continually leverage strong networks of federal politicians, political staff, and government relations professionals.
- Monitor and assess the federal, provincial/territorial and municipal political environments and identify advocacy opportunities and challenges.
- Effectively frame content for political audiences and FCM’s Board of Directors and provide advice to senior FCM staff and our Board of Directors on emerging political issues or opportunities of interest to municipal governments.
**Knowledge, Experience and Skills**
- A combination of professional and lived experience and/or graduate degree in political science, economics, public policy, communications or other relevant discipline.
- 5 - 7 years of related experience leading political, advocacy, and/or public relations campaigns and initiatives.
- A minimum of 2 - 3 years’ experience in progressively senior roles managing staff and external consultants;
- A combination of professional and lived experience and/or a graduate degree in political science, political management, public administration, public relations, communications, or a related discipline.
- Thorough understanding of the function of all three orders of government, stakeholder groups and public decision-making in Canada, as well as an understanding of the interests of municipal governments.
- Excellent writing and oral presentation skills are required, as well as a demonstrated understanding of how to communicate to a political audience.
- Demonstrated capacity to manage large-scale political events (ex. lobby days), political operations, and a keen attention to detail is required.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and judgment, and a high degree of initiative and versatility.
