The objective of the CALL Program is to increase exposure, engagement, and employment potential for individuals from traditionally marginalized communities, including Black, Indigenous, People of Colour (BIPOC) community members, new Canadians, or from low-income neighborhoods, in relation to the field of conservation science and/or other environment-based career pathways.

The Toronto Zoo Learning & Engagement branch is currently recruiting for multiple internship positions that will report to the Climate Action Learning & Leadership Supervisor. Successful applicants will be part of a peer cohort and have the opportunity to work in various areas of the Zoo during the duration of the internship and potentially some external partners such as Earth Rangers. Areas may include: Conservation Science, Wildlife Care, Welfare Science, Strategic Communications, Guest Experience, Horticulture, Exhibit Design etc. ,. Interns will be invited to spend time, job shadow, and gain hands-on work experience in areas of the Zoo they are most interested in (an orientation to the Zoo’s activities will be provided at the beginning of the internship following which the intern will have to submit a report stating their top three areas of interest). Participants will rotate through the different departments of the Zoo and/or work with external partners and gain professional skills, including, but not limited to time management and organizational skills, public speaking skills, communication skills, program planning skills, and more. Interns will also build their knowledge of conservation science and climate change. Through this internship it is hoped that interns will gain increased awareness of local and global wildlife, assist in conducting conservation research, and engage in Zoo keeping practices and organizational strategies to combat climate change or aid in conservation efforts.

**Responsibilities**:

- Work in various areas of the Zoo to gain valuable work experience, knowledge and build transferrable skills. Some experiences may involve lifting and bending.
- Develop leadership skills through engaging others (guests, members, community, online followers) about conservation.
- With support from the CALL team, generate content for social media posts based upon their working experience and participate in social media videos to reach communities to create awareness and engagement.
- With the assistance of the CALL team, design and deliver programs including on/off site events and virtual broadcasts to engage audiences in activities related to conservation.
- Deliver a project focused on climate action/conservation and a written report showcasing the learnings and skills gained during the internship.

- and post-surveys and program impact assessments.
- Demonstrate excellent customer service in all interactions with Zoo guests, staff, volunteers, and members of the community.
- Engage program participants and Zoo guests in a creative and respectful way.
- Follow appropriate health & safety protocols and Zoo policies, including recognizing and reporting any hazards / concerns, and participate in applicable training.
- Maintaining the work area to ensure it exceeds customer expectations and to ensure health & safety guidelines are adhered to, including picking up garbage, wiping high touch surfaces, etc.
- Other related duties as requested by supervisor or designate.

**Qualifications**:

- Completion of high school diploma.
- Previous successful work or volunteer experience preferred.
- Keen interest in conservation and taking positive action to combat climate change.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated ability to work well independently and in a team environment.
- Good customer service skills is an asset, including ability to share information with guests and community.
- Basic computer skills and willingness to learn and use Microsoft Office Suite and social media platforms.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary.
- Must be able to meet the physical and climatic demands of the position.
- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
