As an independent, non-profit, regulatory agency that oversees the sales of personal-use new and used vehicles, the VSA:

- licenses motor vehicle dealerships, salespeople, broker agents, broker agent representatives, and wholesalers
- provides licensing courses and continuing education for VSA licensees
- offers consumer information and assistance
- investigates consumer complaints and provides dispute resolution
- undertakes compliance action as needed

**What is the Role?**

The VSA is currently hiring for an Industry Standards Officer. The Industry Standards Officer ensures consumer protection in motor vehicle related transactions in the province of BC by enforcing and administering the Motor Dealer Act and Business Practices and Consumer Protection Acts. This position delivers the VSA’s Purpose to build public confidence in the industry by engaging and educating industry and consumers ensuring a safe and reliable buying experience.

**What You'll Do**:
The Industry Standards Officer is expected to:

- Reduce risks of non-compliance and consumer harm through a risk-based inspection program and strategy.
- Devise and implement appropriate inspection strategies to ensure speedy, cost-effective, professional, and fair inspections.
- Collect, analyze, and organize large amounts of complex and technical information and physical evidence into detailed, high-quality reports.
- Visit automotive businesses to conduct and complete inspections in a consistently fair and professional manner wherever needed within the Province.
- Meet VSA Industry Standards service standards.
- Educate automotive businesses about the VSA’s expectations and legislation applicable to the automotive industry, including their rights and best practices to comply with the legislation.
- Other duties, as may be assigned by the Manager of Industry Standards.

The Industry Standards Officer works as part of an integrated team building relationships with dealers and salespeople and conducting inspections to ensure consumer protection in motor vehicle transactions in the Province. Using a high degree of initiative, professionalism, discretion and superior dispute resolution skills, the Industry Standards Officer educates and conducts formal compliance inspections of licensees.

**Your Experience and Educational Background**

**Required**:

- A relevant diploma or certificate with a focus in the humanities, public administration, criminology, or other related discipline
- Several years’ experience conducting inspections, preferably in the compliance/enforcement environment
- Equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience preparing reports or regulatory documentation during inspections
- Experience dealing with a variety of contacts and individuals (e.g., business representatives, legal counsel, and members of the public) on complex, sensitive or contentious issues
- Experience and competency dealing with individuals who may be confused, angry or hostile

**Preferred**:

- University degree in law, criminology, legal studies, or a related discipline.

**You Possess the Following Competencies**
- Ability to organize and prioritize work to manage multiple duties and deadlines, such as investigations and inspections.
- Understand business documentation, basic accounting documentation and business contracts.
- Ability to communicate advice and information in a clear and comprehensible manner and gain the cooperation of difficult individuals calmly and respectfully.
- Work well independently as well as be a contributing member of a team.
- Network effectively and establish and maintain a base of trustworthy contacts.
- Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communications skills including interviewing, public speaking and presentation, and the ability to clearly and accurately present evidence at a hearing or in court.
- Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills.
- Computer skills including word processing and use of databases such as Microsoft’s Customer Relations Management (CRM) system.

**Special Requirements**
- Must pass a criminal record check
- Weekend work and travel within the province may be required
- Willing to sign a confidentiality agreement and adhere to BC privacy legislation
