Job Purpose
Manages and monitors the day-to-day custodial operations for Durham District School Board’s (DDSB) facilities (owned & leased). Ensures supreme levels of cleanliness and quality while ensuring that staff, students, and the public are provided with a clean, safe & functional environment. Manages a staff of union and non-union employees within the allocated budget.
Accountabilities
LEAD AND MANAGE THE TEAM
Manage staff and union employees to ensure adherence to budget, timelines, and requirements. Hire new employees, provide training, mentoring, coaching, and discipline as required, and manage employee terminations as required.
Interact with union and management about concerns regarding the union, facilities, staffing, and equipment. Identify any potential obstacles and reassign workload as required.
Organize, plan and schedule staffing requirements, in accordance with the Collective Agreement, and adhering to budgets. Monitor daily and long-term absences to plan for appropriate staff coverage for all DDSB facilities.
**UNION/ LABOUR ISSUES**:
Ensure that the management of union staff is compliant with the Collective Agreement. All activities pertaining to staff management, including filling vacancies, staff transfers, approval of vacation requests, performance concerns, disciplinary action, leaves of absence, return to work, and termination are handled in compliance with the Collective Agreement, and with consideration to past practices.
Document all actions to support future grievances and/ or arbitrations and respond to concerns raised by Principals, managers and union leaders.
Attend grievance, mediation, and arbitration union meetings, as it relates to disciplinary action or termination.
**MANAGE CUSTODIAL OPERATIONS**:
Oversee the custodial operations of facilities including budget management, while delivering supreme levels of quality.
Partner with the Purchasing Department to manage aspects of the RFP process for third-party contracts and recommend high quality and cost-effective equipment & services.
Review quality inspection reports and ensure any quality concerns are addressed.
**INTERNAL STAKEHOLDERS**:
Respond to internal and public inquiries as it relates to cleanliness of facilities.
Represent team on various committees, including the Fire Department Sub-Committee, and Mentoring Committee. Partner with various DDSB Departments, including Facilities Services, to ensure Custodial Services are coordinated appropriately.
**HEALTH & SAFETY**:
Identify staff health & safety requirements and ensure the delivery of training in compliance with relevant legislation and the Collective Agreement. Champion safety as a member of the Joint Health & Safety Committee, as well as the Workplace Inspection Review Committee.
Ensure adherence to the Occupational Health & Safety Act and its regulations.
**Qualifications**:
Education
Completed post-secondary education in a relevant discipline, or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
Experience
Minimum 5 years experience as a Custodial Supervisor
Minimum 2 years management experience
Minimum 10 years experience as a Lead / Secondary Custodian preferred
5 years experience supervising staff within an unionized environment
Knowledge and Skills
Management skills including a demonstrated ability to effectively motivate and lead union & non-union staff
Experience working with Collective Agreements
Exceptional written and oral skills to document & manage contentious issues
Working knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and standards
Ability to work well within the approved budget
