Job Description Summary

Setting the strategic direction and objectives for the Intramural Program, this individual is responsible for the delivery and delivery of the 5 year operational plan. This role provides leadership to ensure that best practices, policies, procedures and processes are in place to achieve objectives across functional areas including: intramural programming, risk management, participant experience, and the Intramural student staff experience. The Manager is also responsible for building and maintaining relationships with on and off-campus partners to facilitate intramural program growth including building the Intramural Alumni network. This individual leads across the recreation and facility units on participant safety. This position will require evening and weekend work.

This position reports to the Director, Intramurals and Recreation and manages three professional staff, while supporting the development of over 225 students.

Organizational Status

Athletics & Recreation (A&R) is a department within the VP Students portfolio, with a strong focus on creating an exceptional UBC student experience. The A&R Department has a team of approximately 100 employees, and is led by a strong cross-unit management team. It services over 20,000 students through recreational programming, 25 varsity teams, 13 competitive club teams, along with thousands of members of the UBC community.

Work Performed

Intramural Program Leadership- Leads the development of strategic objectives and priorities for the intramural program and sets the development of specific program objectives stemming from the 5 year operational plan. Reports on key performance indicators based off of the 5 year operational plan.- Oversees the delivery of all intramural programming including: League Sports, Events and Races and Tournaments. Ensures the timely and professional administration of all operational policies, practices and initiatives relating to relevant programming areas.- Leads on Intramural initiatives to enhance the participant experience around participant communication, campus community building, and participant recognition.- Provides onsite leadership and actively participates as part of delivery team for special events including: Day of the Longboat, Lace Up for Kids, UBC Triathlon and Storm the Wall.- Explores, recommends and oversees implementation of new programs based on current trends, user demographics, best practices and other relevant data. Leads on the creation and delivery of a new large scale mass participation event. Develops and ensures the evaluation of all intramural programs and staff. Manages the implementation of subsequent initiatives to address concerns and opportunities.- Serves as primary lead with the marketing sector and team to set strategic marketing priorities related to Intramural programming and ensure the delivery of key marketing initiatives.- Establishes, leads and maintains key relationships with on-campus and off-campus partners to facilitate the enhancement of intramural programs, staff experience, profile, expertise and resourcing.- Maintains a current knowledge of best practices and trends as they relate to recreational programming.- Leads on the delivery of sponsorship commitments across the Intramural program.- Serves as lead to build and develop the Intramural Alumni network. Coordinates communication, event hosting and development opportunities.

Staff Management- Recruits, hires, trains, manages and evaluates three IM professional staff. Actively develops core competencies and leadership capabilities for Intramural programming staff.- Fosters a culture of excellence and accountability through setting clearly articulated performance expectations, and assist with coaching, goal setting and performance measurement for all intramural professional staff.- Oversees the recruitment, hiring, training, management, and evaluation of all IM student staff and officials.- Identifies and strengthens relationships and opportunities that can enhance the development of leadership and learning capabilities of all staff.- Actively assesses the experience of student staff and impl
