**About Us**:
The Geoscience and Mines Branch of Natural Resources and Renewables, interprets and reports on mineral resource and environmental geoscience issues, and promotes mineral development opportunities to achieve optimum economic, social, and environmental value from the sector. Within the Branch, the Geological Survey Division includes, amongst others, a team of geologists largely responsible for delivering mineral resource, environmental, and data management/dissemination geoscience programs, mineral-investment promotional activities, and providing geoscience advice to government, the public, and mineral industry stakeholders.

**About Our Opportunity**:
The Geological Survey Division requires Geoscience Assistants to work with staff on geoscience projects throughout Nova Scotia this summer. Projects may include bedrock and surficial geological mapping, coastal geology mapping, environmental geology, mineral inventory and metallogenic studies, geochemistry, and geographic information systems/geological database compilation. Positions are based in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

You will:

- receive extensive field and safety training
- gain hands-on experience in field and desktop settings

Things to consider:

- contribute to geoscience mapping, data collection and management, and analysis
- learn the fundamentals of geoscience field operations

Work will commence in early to mid-May and end prior to September. Start and end dates are flexible to accommodate field school commitments.
- These positions will require overnight travel and remote location work.
- Living and working conditions vary widely depending on the location of the project and the work involved. You might live in cottages, motels or tents for all or part of the field season. Depending on the type of work, some crews may operate in remote areas and travel by truck, ATV, boat, canoes or helicopter.
- Field crews are typically small and consist of one or two geoscientists and one to two students.

**Primary Accountabilities**:
Duties may include:

- assisting with data collection and note taking in the field or a laboratory setting
- collecting and preparing rock, sediment or water samples
- navigating in the field
- working with digital data, maps, and databases
- operating vehicles (trucks, ATVs) and/or watercraft

**About You**:
We are looking for Geoscience students who have completed at least their second year of study and who are returning to school as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in a Geoscience program in the fall of 2024.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (eg., Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and/or GIS programs is an asset.

You are able to work in Nova Scotia. You are a Nova Scotian resident or a student studying at a Nova Scotia university.
